Gentle, appealing deck that everyone can use
This is a very nice little Tarot deck. It was commonly sold with the book, "The Instant Tarot Reader" in a set. It is a standard Tarot deck with 78 cards: 22 major arcana and four suits of the minor arcana. The Majors have traditional titles, and the minor suits are Swords, Pentacles, Wands and Hearts (traditionally known as Cups). The court cards of the minor arcana are Princess, Prince, Queen, and King. The images are basically those of the Enchanted Tarot deck, resized and recolored to fit these smaller cards. The images are based upon Amy Zerner gorgeous fabric collage-tapestries. They are soft and feminine, and non-threatening. This is a good deck for a beginner or for those who feel that some of the traditional Tarot images are too dark. In the ... This is a very nice little Tarot deck. In the Devil, instead of the goaty man, with chained people at his feet, we see a face hidden behind an expression-less cold mask. The concept *Trickery and Materialism* is easily linked to the image. The Tower features a dome struck by lightning but no falling people. And Death is a grinning skeleton who almost seems to be dancing toward his transformation. However, don't imagine that this deck can't pack a punch. There's a real wallop in the Ten of Swords, which shows a mother holding (what appears to be) a lifeless child who's been struck by lightning. This card certainly shows RUIN. The meanings for this deck do differ sometimes from traditional tarot meanings. For example, the Eight of Wands, usually seen as 'speed' 'quick travel' 'things happening quickly' here has been changed to "Signals" emphasizing the communication aspect of the card and ignoring the others. And the Ten of Pentacles, whose image normally shows a happy, and wealthy family, shows a castle on a hill, and is given the meaning of "Protection." The deck functioned well in readings for me. I got nice coherent answers out of it--perhaps a little simpler than what I'm used to, but still quite adequate. It might be especially nice for beginners, but I think that even more advanced readers could get quite a lot from this deck, if you stop using the rather limiting book meanings and use your intuition. The cardstock and size of this deck is very nice. It's quite a bit smaller than most Tarot decks, making it fit very comfortably in your hand. The cardstock is a little thinner than some, but also makes it very easy to shuffle and use. I really like the flexibility and small size; it's a welcome change from decks that huge, stiff, and unweildy to handle. The images don't have borders, and the colors are very bright, making it visually appealing, as well. All in all, a very nice deck and one that beginners as well as more experienced readers should enjoy.
