Bringing John Berendt's international best-selling novel, MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL, to the screen must have been a challenge. The book is essentially an anecdotal travelogue of the fascinating city of Savannah, Georgia. The filmmakers decided to add a character, John Kelso (well played by John Cusack), a writer from New York, who's meant to represent Berendt's point of view. They also put most of the focus of the narrative on the murder trial of local millionaire socialite Jim Williams (the redoubtable Kevin Spacey). This is slightly problematic in that Kelso, a mere observer, now becomes the central character of the film. But director Clint Eastwood (straying from his usual milieu, and, atypically, not appearing the film) and writer John Lee Hancock still manage to capture the quirky spirit of the book. They're greatly aided in this regard by the lush images of cinematographer Jack N. Green and the detailed work of production designer Henry Bumstead, who create just the right atmosphere for the small city and its environs. The strong cast, including actual Savannah residents such as sparkplug transsexual the Lady Chablis, makes the film an enjoyable idyll in a strange yet welcoming place.

Fairly true to the book
At times I felt like Keven Spacey was too relaxed, but maybe that was how Jim Williams was during the whole ordeal. We will never know exactly what happened that night, but the movie does follow the book pretty closely.

This movie relies too heavily on the casting of esscentric characters and ugly people dressed in formal clothing. The sets, landscapes and lavish accessories was also excessive as was Spacey's acting. This is not Superman Movie and required a bit more genuine human emotion to pull it off. Spacey shows none and the supporting cast isn't supporting either. The exception to this pretend drama: Jude Law was so good I did not recognize him until the credits!This movie relies too heavily on the casting of esscentric characters and ugly people dressed in formal clothing. Williams was supposed to leave on a trip to Europe on business, and he was also taking Billy, but in light of his actions, Williams had decided not to bring him along. In a rage, Billy destroyed a very valuable antique clock. When Williams attempted to call the police, Hanson pulled a gun and fired. Jim said that he fired back in self defense and killed Billy. The police subsequently arrested Williams and charged him with murder. There case hinged upon the fact that no gunshot residue was found on Billy's hands. Suddenly, Cusack's testimony becomes central to this case, having seen and heard Billy's earlier threats, and witnessed his behavior. In fact the mere sense that he was there as a New York journalist sort of elevated him to a status of authority. This movie is filled with characters and back-stories of house squatters, transsexual individuals, crazy people with insects on strings, and gun toting debutantes. Not to mention, Minerva, the local Voodoo queen who is in communication with both the living and dead. Williams's lawyer is convinced of his client's innocence but some way has to be found around the lack gunshot residue on Billy's hands. As it turns out, the detective in the case lied about having Billy's hands bagged at the crime scene, and Cusack uncovered this lie when he spoke with the Emergency Room nurse at the hospital who was on duty when Billy's body arrived. She stated that she had bagged his hands at the request of the police. This, along with Billy Hanson's shady reputation, was enough to raise doubts and cause a NOT GUILTY verdict. Once again, the rich go free. . . But all is not lost, as Jim Williams had a heart attack and died in the same room as Billy just a few days after the trial.

The Garden of Boredom
I intially bought this movie because I heard Jude Law and Kevin Spacey were starring in it, two exceptional actors; in addition John Cusack, also stars in the movie (also a good actor). This movie should have been good; however even this talented actors could not sustain my interest in this movie. First of all Jude Law is not in the movie long enough for true Jude Law fans, which I happen to be one of. Kevin Spacey although one of the best actors out there, could not keep my interest in this movie. It was long and overdrawn, and had no real plot in my opinion; all I really know is it takes place in the South, but the movie is all over the place and you are like "what the heck is this movie really about?" My mom is a die hard Cusack fan but even she could not see this movie to the end. I ...
