About this product

Product Information

Be prepared to meet three unforgettable women. Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone. Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken. Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own. Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women-- mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends--view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

  • The Help

I grew up and still live in the Jackson, MS area. Recognize names, streets and remember lots of the events that occurred during the time period that the book is about. I travel frequently and loved having this entertaining book to listen to. Several times I had to just park and sit so I could continue listening. Couldn't wait to get in my car to and from work each day. Laughed and cried at the stories, memories and injustices that were done to many of the ladies that raised a lot of the children in homes with "help". Thank God the ignorance of that age has improved in most people of the south and all over America.(didn't occur only in Mississippi and is not restricted just to people in the south)Our world still has a long way to go in improving race relations, but things have come a long ...

  • Great book a must read.

I attend college and don't have time to read this book which was assigned. This was assigned in a Multi-cultural class I am attending. This book is very easy to follow because the character's voices are very distict. This is an eye opening book about how white people let colored people clean their house, take care of their children, etc. when colored people carried diseases, had to use a specific cup to drink out of, use their "own" colored bathroom, etc. I have seen the movie but the book is better. The movie leaves contains less details.

  • The Help by Kathryn Stockett (2009, Unabridged, Compact

This is the only audio tape that I just couldn't put down! It had just enough historical information about civil rights to make the relationships relative. It is a book about a white woman writing a book about how the black maids related to and thought of the white people they worked for. The attitudes of these white households toward not only their help but each other. It showed how one person in the community could influence others to the extent of putting social status and employment in jeopardy. I'm not a book reviewer, I just know that this held my interest and I recommend it to all!

  • What a Great Find and at a Great Price!!!

I went to the movie, The Help. It was such a great movie that I wanted to read to book. So, instead of ordering the book to read, I purchased the audio book of The Help. I listened to this audio while I was painting a picture. I had so much fun doing this. The audio book was so worthwhile listening to all 5 of the women talking. I then went back and saw the movie again after listening to the audio book, as I felt that I missed a few parts in seeing the movie the first time. I have recommended this audio book and the movie The Help to a lot of people. What fun!!!!

  • Very good story that takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride!

After seeing the movie for this story I became interested in the book, which always gives more details. I was not disappointed with this book and the author did a great job in telling a story that had me madd, crying and laughing. So much hate in the story was hard to take but it was very realistic.
