Product Information
A fitting tribute to the hugely charismatic poet and unlikely pop star Ian Dury, whose lyrics are among the most quotable ever written. Andy Serkis is 46 but, like his subject, has never seemed any particular age and pulls off a wonderfully entertaining and appropriate version of the original, who died in 2000, getting the roguish, Rabelaisian spirit of the "raspberry" (as the Blockheads called him) without ever stooping to slavish imitation. Style is fitted to subject, with ragged touches among the classy bits, some courtesy of Dury's old mucker Peter Blake, who also contributes lovely opening titles. A very impressive directorial debut by Mat Whitecross, who co-directed Michael Winterbottom's Road to Guantnamo. Olivia Williams and Naomie Harris breathe real life into Dury's long-suffering partners.
