    It takes a while for everything to sink in with this book, or at least it did for me. A little knowledge of German history will go a long way. There are lots of references to World War II and the book actually takes place before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. I had never read anything by Bernard Schlink and so was unfamiliar with his style; you will appreciate it more the more you read. In the end, this book is all about one man's relationships and the process he takes to realize what really matters. Justice becomes a secondary theme and the weighing or the rightness or wrongness of actions taken by several characters occupy a good number of pages. There are times when the author actually goes into certain philosophical debates that can be hard to follow. If you don't understand ...
