A Great Western, Very Entertaining and Worth a Look.
Generally I love the Universal technicolor westerns from the late 1940's to the early 1960's. "Man Without a Star" is among the very best made by Universal-International during this time period. The story moves at a good pace. The acting is top notch, especially by Kirk Douglas. Kirk always threw himself into his roles and when he's on screen his presence in this film is commanding. The cinematography is first rate, the direction sure footed by veteran director King Vidor. The film has fine supporting characters by familiar bit part character actors. There could be more action but the emphasis in "Man Without a Star" is on the story. Kirk plays a drifting cowhand who hates barbed wire and fenced in spaces. In his journeys he befriends a young man who is more than 'green' behind the ears ... Generally I love the Universal technicolor westerns from the late 1940's to the early 1960's. The two bond like brothers and find jobs on a cattle ranch on the open range; but soon afterwards barbed wire and ambitious ranchers crowd in and lead to a full out range war. Splitting Kirk and Campbell's friendship and heightening tension on the range. Complicating matters are romantic interests (Jeanne Crain and Claire Trevor) and evil cattle drover turned ranch foreman (Richard Boone). There's some nice fist fight scenes, some shoot outs, neat dialogue, a catchy theme song and a stampede thrown in to spice things up. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being GREAT, Man Without a Star is an 8.5 or 9 for me. Top quality, enjoyable entertainment for any western movie fan. This particular Universal Vault DVD has excellent picture and sound quality. Although pricey at $18.55 USD plus shipping for one 75 or 80 minute movie; it is a nice addition to the movie fan's western DVD collection. I just wish these movies were priced more affordable at $9.99 to $12.00 each so I could buy more. Hopefully Universal in the USA and Canada will release some of their other 1950's classic westerns on DVD for region 1 (North America) like: Hell Bent for Leather, Untamed Frontier, Star in the Dust, Four Guns to the Border, Red Sundown, Tumbleweed and Gunsmoke (Audie Murphy).

The Parents send their kids on ahead why they try to fight off the attack. Kirk Douglas who is traveling along with the Wagon train as a prisoner. The children who have now seen their parents killed half to decide weather or not to cut Kirk Douglas loose and trust him to get them to safety.
