About this product

Product Information

A French ILLUSIONIST finds himself out of work and is of a dying breed of stage entertainers. He is faced to accept increasingly obscure assignments in fringe theatres, at garden parties and in bars and cafΘs. He finds himself performing in a village pub off the west coast of Scotland where he encounters Alice, a young woman, where their ensuing adventure changes both their lives forever. The story of THE ILLUSIONIST derived as a love letter catalogued by Centre National de la CinΘmatographie half a century ago. This un-produced script has until now been transformed to film by the critically acclaimed creator of Belleville Rendez-vous, Sylvain Chomet.

Reviews
Guardian - Gentle, affectionate, whimsical, but deeply felt and with an arrowhead of emotional pain., Empire Magazine - Bittersweet, moving and utterly beautiful: a love letter to cinema and to Scotland., Daily Telegraph - French animator Sylvain Chomet's The Illusionist is a gushing love letter to Edinburgh, its unique geography, architecture and distinctively pale, wintry light.
Consumer Advice
Contains a scene of aborted suicide and images of smoking

  • Do not die before you see this film!

This is a fantastic movie. The animation is so fresh and colourful, it's as if the paint is still wet. It's not a conventional love story - there is no love, as such, but you fall in love with the beauty of wild Scotland, and then moreso with the majestic grandeur of Edinburgh. Poignant, but never heart-breaking, the Illusionist will make you feel glad to have lived long enough to see this film.
