About this product

Product Information

The Canon Speedlite 220EX Automatic Shoe Mount Flash makes quality photography easier. Compatible with the full line of EOS cameras and the T09, the Speedlite 220EX’s focal plane flash mode and flash exposure lock function makes it particularly suited to Canon’s high-end models. The Canon Speedlite 220EX’s flash exposure lock function allows the camera to recall the exposure settings for any selected view of the subject while composing the image in the viewfinder. After locking the exposure settings, the 220EX allows you 16 seconds to compose the image. Focal plane flash mode makes it possible to use flash at higher shutter and film speeds than the flash sync speed. The evaluative through the lens (E-TTL) auto-flash mode excels at producing natural-looking flash exposures. Working in conjunction with Canon’s AIM system, the Speedlite 220EX analyzes pre-flash data, ambient light level, evaluative metering, and "noise," such as heavy backlighting caused by mirrors and windows, to anticipate flash intensity and prevent flash blowout. An automatic shut-off feature initiates after 90 seconds of inactivity, preserving power from the four AA batteries (Canon recommends lithium or NiCd) that power the Speedlite 220EX. The 220EX covers the shooting angles of both the IX240 24mm lens and 135 28mm lens and takes between 0.1 and 4.5 seconds to recycle a charge, making it a capable flash for high-speed and actions shots. The Canon Speedlite 220EX has a range of 2.3 feet to 63 feet (with the DSLR set to ISO 100) and a built-in autofocus (AF) assist beam to help focus when shooting in dim lighting. When the AF-assist beam engages, it sends an infrared light to the center focusing point of the subject. A sensor in the 220EX measures the distance from camera to subject, then adjusts focus as needed using the flash. The AF-assist has a range of 2.3 feet to 16.4 feet. The Canon Speedlite 220EX measures 2 9/16 inches by 3 5/8 inches by 2 7/16 and weighs 5.6 ounces (excluding batteries), making single-motion attachment and detachment with its standard hot-shoe lock mount that much easier. A green flash confirmation lamp illuminates with each flash and its Save Energy (SE) feature automatically shuts the flash during a certain period of inactivity. The Speedlite 220EX is compatible with all Canon EOS cameras and the T90. However, the E-TTL function only works with the EOS Rebel G, EOS ELAN II, EOS IIE, and EOS IX. Like the Speedlite 430EX and 580EX, you operate the Speedlite 220EX independently of your DSLR using a Canon off-camera shoe cord or designated third-party accessories. You also only operate the flash automatically off camera. It doesn’t have a manual mode. The Canon Speedlite 220EX gives your camera just the flash boost it needs at a reasonable price point. It delivers natural-looking exposures in dim conditions without the glare and harshness common to lesser quality flash systems. The 220EX measures ambient light and reflective surfaces to deliver near-flawless results each time. Its FP Flash (high-speed sync) allows for digital flash shooting at the top shutter speed and, with a flash recycle time of 0.1 and 4.5, take shots of sports and other fast-motion imagery that meet the highest of specifications.

Condition was exactly as described, the camera arrived in perfect condition with obvious care given to packing. I ordered on 1/29 and the package arrived on 2/2...from Japan, no less! Seller was responsive to my inquiries about signature requirements. All in all, a 100% positive experience. Would order from them again!

The lens arrived in excellent condition. Very well packaged and exactly as it appeared in the description. I highly recommend the seller. The only problem is the rates that DHL charges buyers. They are too high, much higher than FedEx or Japan Post. I had to pay 50% of the purchase value. Thank you.

What a great seller! The lens is exactly as described--actually, better than described. His communication is fantastic, his packing is top notch and his shipping is lightning fast all the way here to the US from Japan. Highly recommended. If you're in the US, don't worry about buying from Japan from this seller, he's honest and reliable.

Interim review is positive. I need to use the 220EX more

I bought the Canon 220EX for my Canon 7D because the built in flash has limited range. I bought this compact flash over the inexpensive, versatile but bigger Yongnuo models as I would be more likely to have the 220EX in my camera bag. The flash is quite powerful, and works every time. My only reservation so far is that it tends to slightly overexpose photos taken within about 7 feet (~2 m) on any setting I've tried. I need to experiment more. Cycle time is fast enough and I even took a good bounce flash photo by putting a white card at a 45 degree angle to the flash in a room with a low ceiling. I may increase the rating to 5 stars with more experience. drj3253

It's OK but am still looking for better.

Pros: compact, nice output, good recycle Cons: shoe attachment is mediocre, no test button, no manual controls at all. Even though I use on my 7D (should be same generation) it still doesn't seem to integrate fully with the camara. I have better results with a cheap insignia brand flash w/ manual controls than I do with this operating it through the camera.

  • Canon 220EX Flash Review

The Canon 220EX flash is a very basic external flash. I purchased it for my Canon G10 camera so the size and portability of the flash was very important as this flash is only there to provide extra light output when the on camera flash is not enough. I also have the Canon 550EX and the 580EX flashes that I can use when I want to illuminate very large areas. The 220EX doesn't have any manual controls or any options that I utilize. It is a basic external flash with a reasonable recycle time. I found the recycle time to be adequate as compared to a friends 270EX flash. it recycles faster, probably because it uses 4AA batteries and not 2AA batteries. There is no bounce feature so the lighting is very direct. I'm working on ways to bounce the light vertically and horizontally and should ...
