    Timeless title.

I studied this film in my high school cinema analysis course. The features showing the making of the motion picture are fascinating and the outtakes give incredible insight into how Chaplin- the film auteur- may have thought about his production. This is a must-have for any silent film or Chaplin buff.

  • Chaplin's Finest

By far, this is Charlie Chaplin's finest work ever. The endearing character of the little tramp returns in a story about blind love and the undying romantic. A film that is both highly comedic and at once poignant, this film will have you rolling in laughter and at times choking back heartfelt tears. This is a movie no-one should go without seeing. Released in 1931 when 'talkies' (movies with talking in them, rather than silent films) was all the rage, Chaplin held fast to his art, but allowed sound effects that added a pleasant touch throughout the movie...and created one of the top 100 films of American cinematic history. No-one could do comedy like Chaplin, and no movie was as exquisite as "City Lights". Watch it. Prepare to laugh wildly, and I challenge you to ...

  • city lights dvd

CITY LIGHTS is a masterpiece in its time and ours. who else but chaplin would dare put out a silent movie 4 years after the introduction of sound and still have a hit? it would be like putting out something on vhs only in our world of dvds. THIS dvd set (indeed the whole mk2 series) i full of super extra features, including footage shot by a friend while chaplin worked out the "meeting the blind girl" sequence. the only negative to me was these classic fragments have no soundtrack-it is indeed a silent picture. on the whole,it is great to see these lost scenes regardless....

  • A MASTERPIECE

I've seen about 50 full length feature silent films, some of them several times, and this one may very well be my favorite. It's a comedy, but very emotionally powerful as well. It is a very accessible film for modern viewers: I assigned it to 19 high school students with very little introduction, and their reviews were highly enthusiastic. Their AVERAGE on a scale of 1 to 10 was 9.1. In previous years (about 100 students total) their ratings were similar.

  • City Lights

A true gem in Hollywood and film history. One can truly understand the genius of Chaplin when they see this movie. No wonder he was the most famous image worldwide at his time. The film captures every essence of its creator. The mishaps and chaotic sequences are done so skillfully that its like watching poetry in motion. But the greatest virtue in his film are the moments of poignancy, where we feel for the "Little Tramp" because we can identify with him. Everyone has felt love, betrayal, hope and any other form of emotion that makes us human and thats why we see the film not from an audience perspective but from a friends. We dont see his journey but venture with him. We go along for the ride. So when he becomes accepted in the end so do we. We succeed as much as he does and thats what ...
