About this product

Product Information

A four-million-year-old black monolith is discovered on the moon, and the government (while hiding the situation from the public) sends a team of scientists on a fact-finding mission. Eighteen months later, another team is sent to Jupiter in a ship controlled by the perfect HAL 9000 computer to further investigate the giant object--but on this trip something goes terribly wrong. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Director and (with Arthur C. Clarke) co-screenwriter Stanley Kubrick has created a visual and aural spectacle that stands as one of the greatest achievements ever put on celluloid. The film begins with the "Dawn of Man" segment, about the evolution of apes, and then ventures into the future, taking a look at what the world might be like in the first year of the 21st century. Kubrick's film is a triumph of technological storytelling, with stunning sets and a brilliant, overwhelming soundtrack. Long dialogue-free scenes sparkle with indelible images backed by powerful orchestral music, culminating in an unforgettable, inscrutable tale of birth and rebirth, human evolution and artificial intelligence, the past and the future.

    One of the Best!

Possibly the most important film ever made. 2001's "surface story" is a science fiction masterpiece, with stunning and beautiful cinematography and an engaging script. A little slow-paced (intentionally), and at times a bit creepy (also intentional). The deeper story, however, is a masonic masterwork, symbolically detailing the entire path to enlightenment and spiritual evolution. Mr. Kubrick made many excellent movies, but this one stands out as his masterwork.

  • A Mindblowing Roller Coaster Ride By A True Visionary Producer!

This DVD 2001 A Space Odyessey is one I have been wanting a long time, but whenever the opportunity came up to purchase it my wife or my kids or my friends would always seem to need something when I was in the store or call me on my cell phone and distract me. But as the saying goes: All good things come to those who wait. And believe me, it's TRUE! Waiting for this DVD to come into my collection of movies has been worth the wait. Stanley Kubrick's vision of the future was absolutely mindblowing! When then President John F. Kennedy on May 25th, 1961 made his proposal for NASA to put a man on the moon before the end of this century and this goal was realized on July 24th 1969, the WORLD WAS AMAZED! Now here we have Stanley Kubrick WAY before the first landing on the moon by astronauts, ...

  • A Must See for every Sc-Fi Fan

I saw this movie when it was first shown in the local theater in 1968. Stanley Kubrick brought out the best in Arthur C. Clarke when they worked together to make this movie. When it was released it was so far advanced technologically that many people hated the movie. However true Sci-Fi fans loved it. The way Clarke brought space to life in this movie was years ahead of it's time. You have to remember that in 1968 only a hand full of humans had ever even been in space, let alone established colonies or built ships large enough for anyone to live in. 2001 is one of the best space movies ever made and I highly recommend all Sci-Fi fans to add this one to their collection.

  • Hal if you were on ebay I would buy you.

In space the only difference between life and death is merely that of lines flattening out on a monitor. HAL, our happy computer, given life by the voice work of Douglas Rains tells us that he is more human then that of the main character Dave. I feel that Hal is the future that Kubrick saw. The things we build to help us will eventually become so powerfull that they will dislike the humanness of our existance and wish for our destruction.
