  • "Eagle of the Ninth" fans will be disappointed.

The only redeeming virtues of "The Eagle" are that some of it was filmed on location and that great attention was paid to detail. Other than that, I think fans of Rosemary Sutcliff will be disappointed with the screenplays almost complete departure from the original story. Granted, the original was not written as a screenplay and it would have been difficult to cover it's grand scope. Still, the film does not form a coherent story but rather a collection of disconnected vignette's. The original "The Eagle of the Ninth" by Rosemary Sutcliff explains how a British slave becomes the devoted friend of his Roman master, and how they together travel into Caledonia disguised as a Greek Oculist and his slave. These are plausible scenarios. In the movie it is ...

  • The Eagle is great with awesome fight scenes.

The picture is very engaging. It showed leadership in time of distress. The ending was terrific when he stuck it to the politicians.

  • A fine film about Romans in Britain that is revealing and offbeat

To its credit this film sticks close to the book, except that a girl character is missing. It is in some ways a revelation: it is not a typical sword and sandals movie at all. It takes place in Britain at a time when the empire stood off Pict barbarians from the north but was to be in retreat not long after. The plot revolves around recovering the eagle of the ninth legion which disappeared on a mission to the north. Two companions eventually retrieve it from a tribe and bring it back to camp. If you're looking for a more thoughtful action picture that is something different you can't go wrong with this.

  • Great!

Great movie if you are into this type of movie. A must for my collection of Blu-rays. If you are into chick flicks or fancies, this is not for you.
