About this product

Product Information

Vincent Vaccardi (Ray Sharkey) has talent and drive, but in the singing world of 1959, he knows he has to have looks too. Determined to find success for his songs, he latches on to a local performer and shapes his image into Tommy Dee (Paul Land), who's suddenly an overnight sensation. As his own power and income increase, Vinnie doesn't realize he's lost his focus on the work and is becoming a feral, driven taskmaster. When Tommy starts to agitate for bigger things, Vinnie realizes he'd better have more than one trick up his sleeve. He finds another fresh face (an unbelievably young Peter Gallagher), whom he transforms from Guido the busboy into Caesare--a reclusive, mysterious singing sensation. Vinnie's formula is on the money, and Caesare is catapulted to fame as well, but Vinnie finally begins to see that he may have left something important behind, and that he's not the only one who might have to pay for it. Director Taylor Hackford's THE IDOLMAKER is a brutal exploration of the creation, manipulation, and destruction of teen idols and their audience in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The Idolmaker; one of my favorites nearly forty years ago and still today

The film gives an unflinching portrait of what can happen to promising young careers when money and over inflated egos get in the way of once loyal and productive partnerships. It also shows how important following one's gut instincts can be when it comes to the complex world of show business. Also contains a heartening, very memorable soundtrack and interesting, flawed, three-dimensional characters.

  • Still resounds over twenty five years later!

There was a period that the musical made a brief comeback. We had Saturday Night Fever, Grease, The Wiz, Xanadu, You Can't Stop The Music, The Jazz Singer and Flashdance to name a few. In the midst of all this, a small film was produced in the same year as The Jazz Singer, starring Neil Diamond. It was a film called The Idolmaker. Meant to loosely represent the life and times of Bob Marucci, the guy that brought Fabian and Frankie Avalon of "Beach Blanket Bingo" fame, it shows the flight and turbulence of his meteoric rise to legitimacy through hard work, sacrifice, and the terrorizing of his musical charges. Ray Sharkey, a more than competent actor really electrifies the character he plays, Vincent Vaccardi, and shows the passion and deep pain of the rise and fall of his creations. ...

  • The Idolmaker

This is a fantastic movie. The story is real good. I saw this when it first came out in the movie theaters. It's directed by Taylor Hackford. Incredible director. Ray Sharkey is a great leading actor for this movie. I still enjoy watching this some 20+ years later. It's portrayed about the lives of Frankie Avalon & Fabian. Although they said it's not because it made them look bad. But I am sure it is. A lot of the music is written by the songwriters Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil. The music is solid but my one complaint being a musician and music lover of the 50's & 60's. It's way over produced and way too slick for that era. Which does effect the mood of the movie. But is still one of my favorite all times movies. Enjoy!!!

  • Idolmaker is a hard find but an enjoyable movie for 50's retro music lovers

This dvd is a hard find, so I am glad I found one at an ok price. I haven't seen this movie since I was in High School & remembered I liked the music. One of my class mates was an extra in the movie & I like Peter Gallagher, so I am looking forward to watching this again.

  • Underrated classic

I was interested in this movie because Denny Terio did the chorography on it but, I had no idea I would like it so much. I find myself singing the songs to myself from time to time! The guys are really cute too :)
