Humanoids From the Deep (aka Rape-O-Rama)
One of my all-time favorite horror films, Humanoids From the Deep is the Roger Corman produced film about a small fishing community being overrun by fast evolving frog monsters from the sea that come up and tear people apart, not to mention rape the young, buxom naked women (the nudity in this film is phenomenal). It's up to a couple of locals (including the late Doug McClure) and scientist (Ann Turkel) whose company played a role in creating the creatures, to stop them once and for all. Feminist director Barbara Peters (albeit with the help and guidance of Corman) manages to direct a fun and engaging graphically violent monster movie. The film serves as some heavy-handed irony though, as Peters had originally intended to present an allegorical feministic approach towards the film, which ... The film serves as some heavy-handed irony though, as Peters had originally intended to present an allegorical feministic approach towards the film, which was completely lost in translation as its audience was completely divided up between fans who never saw the message and haters who were incredibly offended by this rather dark film. The film never loses sight of this dark tone, keeping it all the way through the blood-splattering climax to the even bloodier and grim ending. The gore effects and deaths are great, as are the monster suits, which are clearly man-worn costumes, but fun nonetheless. The film also features the late, great Vic Morrow in a role as a local yokel. Overall, Humanoids From the Deep is a rare and fun treat that many horror enthusiasts should see, but good luck though. The DVD is VERY hard to come by, and very expensive. I consider myself very lucky to own this film again Great film, though.
