War in Space: YMMV
Part of the “cash in on Star Wars” wave of films from the late ‘70s, The War in Space (1977, Toho. Not to be confused with the earlier ‘Battle in Outer Space’ or the Japanese title for the ‘60s Star Trek), this film is… an acquired taste. It’s not very good. Startling clumsy even. Yet it has its own charm and sensibility and deserves to not be ignored or forgotten. The story seems oddly compacted, as if it was a TV series that had been chopped up to fit a 90 (well, 91) minute run time. A LOT seems to happen ‘just because’. Yet for all that this film seems to have been important, influential to a generation of Japanese who grew up to enter the animation business. The Goten space battleship (not to be confused with the Goten super flying submarine battleship from the earlier ‘Atragon’) ... So the question is, would you enjoy this film? If you liked ‘Starcrash’ and ‘Message from Space’ then you should have a good time. But don’t pay crazy prices for it. I got very lucky. This is a film you might enjoy at $20 USD but not at hundreds of Dollars. I strongly suggest contacting the releasing company, Discotek, to lobby for a re-release. Their license may have expired but renewal might be possible. Don’t let this kind of film become lost!

The War in Space
Godzilla fans will love this movie as it echos the TOHO tradition. Typical plot of futuristic (for the time) space ships, weapons and evil doers. One of those movies you can sit and enjoy and not try to think about what the plot is or what the director was trying to state. Typical serious characters who try to make you believe it really happens. I just got this movie and I have already viewed it three times - if you remember Mystery Science Theater 3000, this is one that might even be to good for that. If you don't like Godzilla movies, this is not the movie for you but if you do, this has to be part of your collection.Godzilla fans will love this movie as it echos the TOHO tradition. Rare Toho Sci-Fi Gem
I only recently discovered this classic 70s Toho Sci-Fi movie, and I loved it. This is the perfect mix of Atragon and Space Battleship Yamato. The DVD includes both the original Japanese version and the English dub.

Godzilla Fans Will Like This
If you're fans of the genre, and enjoy watching the many fims spawned by Godzilla and directed by Inishiro Honda, you'll probably enjoy watching this. Very colorful and lots of action. The spaceships designed like submarines reminded me of Atragon. Just good "brainless fun." If you're not into that stuff, then I wouldn't recommend this film for you!
