About this product

Product Information

This now-classic novel by Richard McKenna enjoyed great critical acclaim and commercial success when it was first published in 1962. The winner of the coveted Harper Prize, it was on the New York Times bestseller list for seven months and was made into a popular motion picture that continues to be shown on television today. Set in China on the eve of revolution, the book tells the story of an old U.S. Navy gunboat, the San Pablo, and her dedicated crew of Sand Pebbles on patrol in the far reaches of the Yangtze River to show the flag and protect American missionaries and businessmen from bandits. The plot revolves around a newcomer to the boat, machinist's mate Jake Holman, a maverick and loner who dramatically alters the lives of the crew and the people they have come to save. A faithful engine-room coolie and a pretty young missionary help Holman gain an appreciation of China and its people and discover a world of humanity and promise he has never known. It is a story of old loyalties versus new values, of violence and tenderness, tragedy and humor, and it engages the reader from the first line to the last. This new paperback edition includes in informative introduction by Robert Shenk, written for the Naval Institute's Classics of Naval Literature edition in 1984.

  • Excellent Historical and Literary Book

This is the book that the epic 1966 film The Sand Pebbles was based on. Although the movie does differ in parts from the book, those who loved the film would do well to read the book. Even without the film, the book stands alone as an incredibly accurate window into 1926 China. Naval historians, and even historians in general, will find this book very interesting. The author served on a US Navy gunboat in the mid 1930's. He was able to hear stories from his shipmates who had served on the Yangtze in 1926. 1926 was when Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek led the Chinese Nationalists in an attempt to create a new China, free from foreign power external interference as well as the Bolsheviks and Chinese warlords who were attempting to control things. The author's descriptions and depictions of the ...

  • Great bargain for a naval classic long out of print!

“The Sand Pebbles” is a great book that accurately depicts naval service, regardless of the era one served in. While the motion picture was quite good and largely faithful to the book, the book is a much more expansive story, with richly developed characters and dialog that could only have been written by a man who lived much of it. The US Naval Institute Press released a paperback edition so that the newer generation of sailors could benefit from the story of a salty machinist mate and the interplay among the crew of the USS San Pablo, a fictional Yangtse River gunboat in 1926 China. I highly recommend this novel for anyone with an interest in the navy.

  • At first the title is a little misleading since the ship is acutually called the "San Pablo"

I am a retired USN sailor that can relate to the story.

  • Great Adaption of a True Story

This is based on a true story that will bring back memories and be wonderfully nostalgic for any Navy veteran.
