    Uniquely engaging if violent tale.

Missed this in the theaters but I've now heard Seth Meyers tell each of the stars that it's one of his favorites. I can see why. Farrell is a hapless novice hit man, at grips with something terrible he's done, Brendan Gleeson the more experienced friend who brought him into the trade. They've arrived in story-book-sleepy Bruges, Belgium, awaiting orders from their boss, Ralph Fiennes, back in London. Gleeson, relaxed and feeling he's on a brief holiday, wants to enjoy Bruges. Farrell, on edge and tormented, can't imagine such a thing - until he meets a pretty, friendly girl. There is a back and forth in mood between light realism, farce, comedy, violent eruption. But this story of "honor among murderers" unfolds skillfully and with dark, dark irony.

  • Writer-director cinema at its utter best

This is a gem. A highly original and at every turn an intelligently shaped gem. And it's better each time you watch it. The setting is amazing, the score is haunting, the jokes are bolder and funnier and more frequent than any recent film can manage, and the core performances are Oscar-level acting. Brendan Gleeson is the unglamorous hit-man enraptured by the canals and buildings of the city of Bruges, Colin Farrell is the incompetent trainee, who's in Bruges after the botched assassination of a priest - over which he feels guilty because a little boy was shot in the course of the job - and he's so troubled he simply detests Bruges. One is protective, one is anarchic, and nothing is what it seems. Gradually new dimensions open up, most of them hopeful, but generally all too ...

  • The Best Film of 2008

In his first foray as a writer/director, Martin McDonagh has created a truly unique film. "In Bruges" follows two hitmen-Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson)- who are ordered into hiding in the titular city. Farrell and Gleeson are equally brilliant throughout the film, packing their performances with humor and drama. Ralph Fiennes is excellent as the unpredictable, unhinged, hilarious crime boss who comes to Bruges to settle a score with his henchman. Another truly remarkable feature is the backdrop of Bruges itself. At one point in the story a character remarks that no classic film has ever been filmed in the city; she stands corrected after viewing this film.

  • In Bruges

Shows the beginnings of how the 2 main characters complemented one another resulting in the award winning movie Banshees of Inisherin.

  • In Bruges - Sad, Funny, Must See!

This is one of those movies that you should have in your collection...some where next to The Godfather, but in close proximity to A Knight's Tale or something along those lines. It has dark humor, but the scenes will stay with you for months. I really enjoyed the actors' performances throughout the movie, and decided that it was the kind of movie that I'd watch again. If you like dark plotlines and movies that center around crime and Europe, then you will probably enjoy it as much as I did.
