When their parents are lost in a tragic river accident, Eve (Carroll Baker) and Lilith (Debbie Reynolds) go their separate ways. Eve remains on the land that took her parents, settling down with the well-intentioned Linus Rawlings (James Stewart), while Lilith becomes a singer who is courted by the conniving Cleve Van Valen (Gregory Peck) when he learns that she has inherited a fortune in California. As time passes and the Civil War takes the life of Linus, the newest generation of Prescott offspring struggles with even greater danger and loss, in the form of fierce Indians as well as family archrivals. A DVD that is well-worth buying....especially for the bonus disc covering the invention of Cinerama.The various roles portrayed are well-acted by the numerous players.It is a very good chance to see multiple former Hollywood-greats in one film.Of course,there will be detractors who will take exception to how various sections of the film are presented or portrayed.....no presentation of any historical film will satisfy everyone. The criticism of the quality of the DVD is unwarranted.Viewing the material should be the prime purpose of the exercise....not nitpicking the technical shortcomings of a 50 + year-old production. Entertaining but the quality of the DVD was poor.
The quality of the DVD was poor. The movie itself was entertaining. I bought it because I wanted to see some old-time actors and get a flavor for how difficult it was for early settlers in the U.S. I was going to give the DVD to my great-nephew -- he loves old-time movies -- but the quality was just too poor for gift-giving.

How the west was won is the best title.
I enjoyed this movie a great deal. There is quite a lot of History behind it. All actors are very good in al roles. This the best movie I have watched.
