Sony HI FI Stereo SLV-N51 Player-Recorder

I received my VCR recorder -player and am very happy with it. It is in very good condition and works well, There are only a couple of small scratches on it, that was expected. I will not hesitate to purchase from this site again if I need to.

  • Top critical review

It functions but with caveats for something maybe over 12+ years old. Unsure if that's the same fate for all existing VCRs.

The fact that I have a VCR is gratifying for me as the one I had won't play videos anymore as I had not turned it on in almost 11 years. The picture quality improved as the VCR perhaps warmed up after 30-40 minutes or so. I do not know if that's what I would expect with another VCR or maybe the toy (frisbee type) that was inside the tape loading compartment may have impacted the heads. I was able to see my movie though but I was afraid to touch Rewind or Fast Forward for fear of losing a clear picture.

  • With this deck, the Sony name doesn't mean high-quality

I owned this exact, same model which worked flawlessly for three years, but then, ate a tape, and would not function after I carefully tried to extract the yards of tape bound up inside it.. so I bought a replacement (used) SLV-N51 off eBay.. NO retail stores sell consumer HiFi VHS decks any more.. only combo VHS / DVD decks.. I've owned five VHS decks since the 1980s.. three were HiFi VHS.. I believe Samsung made these Sony decks and branded them for Sony, since I have a broken Samsung with the exact same chassis and case, and 99% similar buttons, but the Samsung's remote had tracking buttons.. the Sony's remote does not.. these decks are so cheaply-made, that when one breaks, it'd cost more to have it repaired, than to just buy another (used) one.. I'm not about to throw out hundreds of ...

  • Used Sony VHS VCR

I purchased this used to do some VHS transfer to my computer to digitize to DVD. While it did not have a remote, I was able to operate it with the front panel controls and it worked great! I found a remote for it on eBay and purchased it and it works great as well. I'm going to hold on to this machine for future use in transferring VHS tapes to digital.

  • Vintage VCR

A small plastic piece must have been dislodged inside the VCR during shipment. It wouldn't let the left side of the tape go down properly. Opened up the cover. Removed the piece and now it works great. Have been running a Disney tape for the past hour just to make sure its working. Have no idea what it did.
