Great historical drama
The revolution in England led by Cromwell is well told in this epic drama. I don't buy movies I haven't already viewed and enjoyed on TV or in the theater. My expectations were met.

Cromwell DVD
Oliver Cromwell was a great man, used by God to free the English people from the tyranny of the Stuart monarchy. Though the monarchy resumed after Cromwell's death, once the people had tasted freedom things were never the same again for the British throne. This DVD does a good job, by and large, of preserving historical accuracy. Dr. Joe Morecraft recommended this DVD in his series on the History of the Reformation. I would highly recommend looking him up on sermonaudio.com and listening to his messages there. Having listened to many of these messages first, it helped me to understand some of the characters at the first of the movie, like the Earl of Stratford. If you didn't know a little of the real history behind this man, the movie might leave you a bit confused. I do ... Cromwell fought for freedom in the state and in the church. This is hinted during the scene where Cromwell states up in the middle of a church service and throws the papist articles of idolatry off the table in the church. It reminds me of Jennie Geddes actions during the Scottish reformation, when she through a chair at the bishop and decried, "You'll not say mass in my presence!" This film could be offensive to Roman Catholics. However, a movie on the history of the reformation would, by necessity, be in opposition to the Roman powers that once ruled Christendom. It is definitely a good selection to have in my library.

Cromwell is Historic!
Cromwell is one of those relatively unknown big budget costume dramas of the late 60's and 70's that executes itself very well. All the actors are pro's and the sets are lavish. Not a musical like Dr. Zhivago, but more like Lawrence of Arabia... If you enjoy this kind of film, then check this out! I ran into it accidentally, and wanted to see the whole thing as a result. Great historical drama that has aged well
This was one of my favorite movies when I was a senior in high school. I saw it at least five times in the movies theater. Therefore, I was greatly pleased to find it on DVD! The production is great. Alec Guiness is fantastic in his portrayal of King Charles I.
