"Get it Right the First Time"
This is a plug and play upstream AFR sensor for the 2004 and 2005 Honda Civics with the 1.7 motor. Don't fool around with aftermarket or what people claim to be a factory replacement AFR sensor for these 2 Years of the Honda Civics. I did tried others but some people seem to have their parts list messed up and they claim that the 01 to 05 Civics all uses the same upstream sensors, which is a false statement. 01 to 03 Civics uses an 02 sensor for the upstream which is completely different than a AFR sensor although they look the same. Honda made a change in their ecm and uses a AFR sensor in the 04 and 05 civics. Ours was a D17A1 engine in a LX model. Some generic OBD2 scanners with say you have a AFR sensor but in reality if you have an 04 or 05, it will be a true AFR sensor. Some test ... Some test equipment will call an AFR sensor an 02 sensor and some generic OBD2 tester will call a 02 sensor a AFR sensor. Do your research and you will find only the 04 to 05 Civics uses this wideband AFR sensor(don't believe in what others say, do your own research!). You can see this on your Live Data Stream with the wrong sensor(02) in your 04 or 05 Civic. You will also notice that your data stream voltage is going up and down and a true AFR sensor doesn't work that way(almost a flat line with hardly any movement on your graph lines and your car won't stay in closed loop for very long with the 02 sensor and will go into open loop and will be running on default data and will throw the check engine light back on. The number on this AFR sensor is the factory number and it is a factory sensor at a great price! I was glad to find it at this price as some places and dealers will charge you up to 100 bucks more. I have not come across another sensor that will work on the 04 and 05 Civics, except for the OEM Up stream AFR sensor........# 36531-PLM-306. I'm trying to get a refund on a Denso AFR sensor that was supposed to be a direct replacement (Denso 234-9005) which the Amazon seller claims that sensor is a direct replacement for the 05 civic and it all looks the same except for the color of the wire on the sensor but again this so call direct replacement is an 02 sensor so our Civic would go into closed loop after driving it for about 10 minutes and the voltage was going up and down and the engine was ok but we could feel it wasn't quite right and then it would go into open loop and throw the code again and stayed in open loop, so with the live data stream, you will see that the 02 sensor won't work and some people advertise the Denso 234-2005 as a AFR wide band for this car, maybe for a 01 to 03 civic which takes a Upstream 02 sensor but again not for the 04 to 05 Civics that needs the true AFR sensor which is the Denso# 36531-PLM-306. Remember if the factory ECM is programed for the use of a true Wideband AFR sensor, no 02 sensor will work or a generic AFR sensor. Don't be fooled by ebay and Amazon sellers on the Honda Civic 2004 and 2005 models, again ours was the LX model. We spent a lot of time diagnosing the problem and our car only threw the p0135 code which had us replace the upstream sensor. That code told us that our old sensor just burnt out the heater circuit in our old sensor which was the factory sensor. Checked everything as far as wiring and connectors and signal reference, grounds and voltage and it was all ok, so replaced with a sensor(Denso #234-9005) that was supposed to be a direct replacement from Amazon, and then the problems began. We checked the Live Stream Data to see what was going on, so we ordered this Denso# 36531-PLM-306 and that was it. We deleted the code and the car has no problems after 500+ miles. The ECM recognized this AFR sensor and relearned it right out of the gate. Factory specs show this number as the original AFR sensor for the 04 and 05 Civics. You might have the numbers Denso 192400-1160 and another 5 digit numbers after that on your sensor. Disregard the 5 other digits since what you are looking for is the Denso 192400-1160 series AFR sensor. If you have this number on your sensor it is the updated number so not to worry, the Denso #36531-PLM-306 is the exact Denso #192400-1160. Do not use the Denso #234-9004 as a replacement for the 04 and 05 Civics with the D17A1 motor. Don't shoot the parts cannon and waste your money. Do it right, test and research and don't believe in all what your read from sellers since most of them just gets their info from the vendor from where they buy their parts. Also beware of sensors on Amazon and ebay that has the red Honda sticker on them, these aren't factory made stickers that are red and says Honda. Our #234-9005 had one of those stickers on it and you can see they are only a copy. The sensor we bought from ebay with the Denso #36531-PLM-306 part number did come in a OEM Honda package as you can see the difference in person, there is a big difference and you can see which one is the original. So again can't go wrong with the OEM parts.
