Big Power, and Nice " Old School" looks...
This amp is really powerful... currently wired to a jl audio 12W6v2 sub @ 1.5 Ohms. The amp is quite under-rated, my unit does 657 watts rms @ 12.5v, that equates to approximately 750w+/- rms @ 14.4v. Being that I have the amp wired out of spec, it's a good thing the amp has an internal fan and a massive heatsink. As for the sound quality of the amp, it makes clean but not well defined music. Allow me to explain, I repair broken amps all the time, and have around 50 units in my inventory. This allows me to hear and compare some very nice amps on a regular basis. I prefer the sound quality of an "Old School" A/B class amp vs. the newer D-class amps of today. My reference amps consist of stuff like Alpine's 3500 series, PPI/Orion ProMos amps, RF_TRANS-ana era amps, MTX's Blue Thunder ... These are all very clean and well engineered amplifiers, not necessarily the best just very good, and well respected. Comparing the Kicker KX500.2 to my favorite, the legendary "ALPINE 3555", the sound produced seems to be a little bit flat. I think using a good out-board active eq should benefit the Kicker. The THD specification is really outstanding for this amp at 0.09%, which is slightly higher than the ALPINE. All things considered, I really like this amp. It appeals my alter-ego/ super hero personality, in that this is one big ass amp. It measures something like 22.5".Now I have to convince my self that I mo longer desire this much power, there is just something to be said for an "Old School Tri-Amped" $ystem. $umthing like two 3555's + a KX500.2 withal big 4 upgrade of course.
