About this product

Product Information

The life of celebrated wildman Charles Bukowski has been brought to the big screen on a number of occasions prior to this adaptation of his book, FACTOTUM. Most notably, Mickey Rourke played Bukowski's alter-ego Henry "Hank" Chinaski in 1987's BARFLY, while 2004's BUKOWSKI: BORN INTO THIS was a fascinating documentary on the alcohol-fueled writer. This Norwegian production from director Bent Hamer sees Matt Dillon taking on the role of Chinaski. Dillon gets the character just about right, subtly perfecting the deadbeat behavior that leads to innumerable firings from menial jobs, while also offering a persuasive depiction of a man lost in the throes of an addiction to booze, women, and gambling. The crumbs of plot that do exist in FACTOTUM find Chinaski enjoying the sexual wiles of poverty-stricken Jan (Lily Taylor) and rich-girl Laura (Marisa Tomei), but essentially the film is all about one man's long, low meander through a sedentary life. The alcohol frequently gets the better of Chinaski, destroying his chances of becoming a writer, obliterating his job prospects, and curtailing his relationships. But Hamer is careful never to judge Chinaski's habits, simply depositing them on screen and weaving them into the story as if they were as essential to the human condition as breathing or eating. The film progresses at a leisurely pace, Dillon's cigarette-and-alcohol-soaked vocal chords provide voiceover narration at appropriate times, and Hamer carefully crafts one of the finest portrayals of Bukowski yet. Set in Minneapolis-St. Paul, which overflows with the depreciated low-rent apartments and cruddy, soul destroying workplaces Bukowski thrived upon, FACTOTUM is an arresting depiction of humanity at its lowest ebb.

    Factotum

Great cast! If you pause it or leave the room-forget it. Its hard to keep track of the movie to begin with! Trying to figure out, matt who aspires to be a writer, although being am alcohplic is better. Tomei is a rich girl friend he hangs with then dumps to keep going backbto a bar fly he met. Between his desire for drinking and trying to write am award winning novel...factotum, is meant to watch one time and sit on the shelf for years...the bedroom window is far better.

  • Excellent Bukowski Tribute, Great Film

An excellent film on the more somber side of adulthood, work and societal existence. Classic Bukowski wisdom and style, a lot of the time verbatim his novels and other literary and personal works. The laureate of skid row, poet, hobo and individual, the film is a small gem. It has an impressive soundtrack and an imposing tone, good for popcorn and whiskey. It's indie style also gives it a nice tint between the Hollywood genre and the more cliche and meticulous indie counterparts. Worth a watch or two, not just for Buk readers.

  • Factomtum- Good buy

This movie was a good buy for its price. If you like Matt dillon as an actor, then this movie won't disappoint(especially if you enjoyed Drugstore cowboy). If your into Bukowski, then I do not know exactly if you will like it. I personally thought it could've been done with a bit more passion. I know that thew overall mood of alcoholism portrayed in film is not a happy one. It could have taken a different direction in expressing the feel of the film. Overall this was the only negative for me. Lili taylor was good, and so was marisa Tomei! She has come along way since my cousin vinny ;)

  • A pregnant pound of poetry....FULLY LOADED

HENRY CHARLES BUKOWSKI "Factotum " as I write this my "I" bleeds, my other is closed. Matthew Dillon portrays "Hank Chinaski" with the pace of a gin laced race horse. Matt creates, lives and falls as Bokowski's "Walter Ego", Hank Chinaski. The supportable cast carries Hank's tobacco, 100 proof fuel and sexual realing's. I highly recommend this film, the Norwegian production team makes you smell, taste and feel the almost comedic ramblings of a real world genious: HENRY CHARLES BUKOWSKI ( Hank Chinaski ). Gin-Sear-Lee................... jOhN bRaNdT NyLuNd P.S: IF YOU FIND "FACTOTUM" BL0WING YOU SKIRT UP TRY "BARFLY" WITH MICKEY ROURKE, 1987 DVD

  • Bukowski still the best!

I bought this off Ebay where I buy everything. I have always loved Bukowski. Barfly, I thought was a great movie. And this one is just as good. So if you enjoyed Barfly you must have this one. Matt Dillion is great and Marisa Tomei is as stunningly beautiful as ever, and a great talent as well. When you do buy this get it from Ebay. The best deals on the best stuff. Bill Bruton.
