About this product

Product Information

Plunging headfirst into history, director Terry Gilliam fearlessly brings the logic of children's fairy tales to bear as he navigates through myth and legend in a bizarre, ingenious retelling of THE WIZARD OF OZ. A boy and six good-natured little persons careen through time-twisting interactions with Napoleon, Robin Hood, and Agamemnon, among others, with a map the little people stole from their employer, the Supreme Being. But their intention is to rob their way through the past, which does not make their boss happy. Meanwhile, Evil is after the map in order to become the Supreme Being himself. The result is an extraordinarily visual extravaganza that overflows with Gilliam's ecstatic vision. The film is shot from a child's viewpoint, both through the character of Kevin and the placement of the camera. One of the morals of this thoroughly enjoyable, charming fantasy is that heroes aren't always all they're cracked up to be. Fun special effects and great supporting performances abound, including terrific turns by Ian Holm, John Cleese, Ralph Richardson, and especially David Warner as Evil.

Great Film For a Few Laughs

Basically the Monty Python version of The Wizard of Oz. Entertaining, good for a few laughs. Although there's History included it's not historially accurate. The little people actors do an excellent job and the appearance of Sir Ralph Richardson at the end make it worthwhile to watch.

Once again, I would seem to differ with the majority on this one.

I am surprised whenever I am reminded that this has been Terry Gilliam's best-selling, and most highly praised movie, up to the present day. Simply because I have to disagree. (As I implied in the title, my tastes often differ from the mainstream's.) It is a Terry Gilliam movie, yes, so it is better than most other movies. It is well-directed, and has a great story. Stuff we can expect from Gilliam. But in my opinion it moves "slower" than his other films, and is one of my least favorite, if not my very least favorite, of all of his films. Is it worth watching? Of course. But re-watching? I must say I've seen it 3 or 4 times, and tend to forget most of the action after a while. It is not, in my opinion, as memorable as his other films. My own Terry Gilliam favorites: 12 MONKEYS, ZERO ...

  • Great movie and saved money with an excellent quality used DVD.

I last watched the movie about 15-20 years ago and enjoyed it very much. Since I never see it on TV and it's not available on YouTube, I decided to buy it. Buying an excellent quality used DVD made more sense than buying a new one. I still enjoyed the movie, maybe not as much as before since I'm older (70) with different comedic tastes, but I'm still glad I purchased it. I also enjoyed saving about $10 on the purchase.

  • Fun Flick

Always has been an interesting, oddball flick. The story is easy to follow and holds the attention. Many of the interactions within the various timelines are funny, as it the reveal at the end. The shopping, ordering and early delivery made for an excellent shopping experience.

  • Fun movie from my childhood

The video & sound quality of VHS is adequate for this movie. I like the historic aspect of the movie even if the facts are not accurate, it is somewhat educatinoal and portrayed in a humorous way (if you like Monty Python). The special effects are lacking by todays standards, but the story is still enjoyable. Who doesn't enjoy little people anyway? I purchased this because I have children now and I thought I should share the story with them. I enjoyed the movie in the 80's and they have enjoyed it 20+ years later. I purchased the VHS version because I didn't want to invest a lot into a special edition DVD that would only be watched 2 or 3 times.
