About this product

Product Information

Stephan Elliott (EYE OF THE BEHOLDER) wrote and directed this tale of two drag queens and a transsexual that embark on a road trip to a remote resort town in the Australian desert on a bus christened Priscilla. When Anthony "Tick"/Mitzi (Hugo Weaving) is invited to perform in Alice Springs, he recruits flamboyant young stud Adam/Felicia (Guy Pearce) and the legendary, refined Bernadette (Terence Stamp) to join him. Mitzi, however, fails to disclose one important fact to his friends: his wife is the one who invited them to Alice Springs. With one big secret about to be revealed and another one up his sleeve, Mitzi is a little stressed. With long hours on the road ahead of them, the trio lip-synchs campy songs on the bus, creates fabulous costumes, and meets a multitude of colorful characters along the way. They party with friendly aborigines, are confronted by judgmental townspeople who are averse to drag queens, and meet Bob (Bill Hunter), a warmhearted mechanic and drag fan who joins them for the last leg of their trip when their bus breaks down in the middle of nowhere. Fantastic costumes and fabulous makeup abound, and fine performances are delivered all around. But perhaps most important are the implicit messages that families come in all forms, that friends can make a family, and that love really knows no boundaries.

    Well Worth a Watch.

It's no wonder this film won the Oscar for best costume design of 1995. They truly are the epitome of fantasy drag costumes. The story revolves around 3 drag queens who tour the Australian countryside in a bus they name Priscilla. They encounter various situations and individuals along the way. Some hostile. Some welcoming. It is a well made movie with a talented cast. The stark, Australian scenery is wonderful. It contrasts against the queens' costumes magnificently. Of course, it is filled with disco tunes to which the "ladies" put on shows for their sometimes hostile audiences. It is a fun show, well worth the time to watch.

Priscilla, basically Ok but prefer full screen.

Funny and entertaining, well acted. I do not like the widescreen version, however,as it feels cramped. A full screen version would be more appreciated instead of black bands above and below the actual viewing area.

  • The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (DVD, 2000)

This is a crazy movie that I caught on TV late one night and it really wasn't bad. Three drag queens take off over the desert in a tour-type bus from Sydney to Alice Springs, Australia. They perform by dressing up like women and mouthing the words to music and dancing. They did a pretty good ABBA. Two of these guys are drag queens and one is actually transsexual. As it turns out, one of the queens is actually married although he has had no contact with his wife for years. They have a son and she has requested that he come to Alice Springs to perform at the casino she manages for three weeks. Alice Springs is located almost dead center in Australia. She needs a vacation, and for him to come and be Dad for a while. Their sojurn across the desert is punctuated by constant engine troubles and ...

  • Funny and entertaining...

I already owned this movie on VHS, but when I found it on EBay at such a great price, I had to upgrade to DVD. This movie has kept me laughing every since the first time I watched it. I enjoyed the movie "Too Wong Foo....." as well (even using quotes from the movie), but I found the acting, costumes, and scenery much more enjoyable in Priscilla. Australia is such a pretty backdrop in this movie. The costumes are both unbelievable and outrageous at the same time; I especially liked the scene where they are driving through the desert with the huge high heel strapped to the top of the bus. The scenes with the bus mechanic and his wife are also hilarious. The storyline is believable and the little side-steps throughout make for an interesting movie. The actors also seem to be enjoying ...

  • Fun movie

Funny off-beat movie. Enjoy it so much. So glad it’s finally available on DVD. Hugo Weaving such a good character in a early career role.
