Cher stars in this chilling courtroom thriller as Kathleen Riley, an exhausted Washington, D.C., public defender who is saddled with an impossible case: clearing accused murderer Carl Wayne Anderson (Liam Neeson), a deaf-mute vagrant Vietnam vet. A young clerk typist (Katie O'Hare) has been found dead, a Supreme Court Justice has taken his own life, and Anderson was found just footsteps away from the young woman's body. All the odds seem to be against Kathleen until one of the jurors, Eddie Sanger (Dennis Quaid), a seductive, if rather slippery, Washington lobbyist, decides to help her by searching for clues himself. Determined to prove the innocence of her wrongfully accused client, Kathleen accepts Eddie's help, forming a top-secret and very illegal partnership. In between bouts of snappy verbal sparring, the unlikely team uncovers a sinister conspiracy that puts both their lives in danger and reveals a highly unlikely suspect at the bottom of an extremely well hidden Washington scandal. Dennis Quaid and Cher are a seductive and witty team in director Peter Yates's entertaining murder mystery that combines cutthroat action with a stylish and imaginative puzzle of clues.

    Pulls you in & keeps you there

    This rare flick pulls you in & keeps you there for the whole ride. This is a great mystery (who done it) with plenty of suspense, twists & turns. --- Without spoiling the movie for you it's plot is ....Is the accused(suspect) the actual guilty party ? --- It takes place in & out of the court room. The pacing is right on, the suspense great & the acting is top notch. All the actors put in great performances especially Cher. If your looking for something that grips & intrigues you from beginning to end I highly recommend "Suspect"

    Innocent until proven guilty.

    One problem - absolutely no "follow up" on the man initially charged with the murder, played by Liam Neeson. One policing error - her car was not made part of the crime scene, and, had it been so, the tape would have been found sooner. It took the defense attorney to check inside the car for it to be located. Duh.

    Cher At Her Second Best!

    Of course her first best is singing..but her acting comes in a close second. she really is great in suspense. (I can't believe "kuiipo" gave a spoiler in his/her review please people do not tell the entire story in your review or give away the ending that ruins it for those who have yet to see the movie. I'm glad I saw the movie first then checked out the reviews...)Back to my main point, Cher would be great in horror I would love to see her do more suspense work..now on to the review..Film opens on a over worked under s***d defense Lawyer who works her butt off and has no time for herself yet she loves what she's doing..a new case is forced on her..her heart takes over and she decides to help this Man above and beyond the call of duty..then in walks a handsome ...

    Enjoyed this oldie

    A young Cher and a very young Dennis Quaid team up for this courtroom drama.. Liam Neison, also very young, plays a non-speaking role. It also has John Mahoney as the judge…….whole lot of great actors in one movie! It kept my attention.

    suspenseful

    I believe this is one of Cher's best acting jobs. It's an excellent movie, full of drama and suspense. It will keep you on the edge of your seat at times. I've seen it a few times and never tire of it.
