A life changing experience
This guy can be just a little bit too evangelical sometimes but this latest venture seemed to me to have far more sincerity than most of his usual output so having watched the first couple of episodes we took the plunge and bought the book. It's probably going to need to be replaced at some point because it has taken pride of place in the kitchen alongside maybe 3 or 4 other books we use regularly, and both my partner and myself are sold on the meat free days idea - maybe only one or two a week but we haven't missed the meat on the days we've gone "veggie" There are highlights - the roasted tomato sauce is now a house staple, as are roast root stews, beetroot frittata, the use of aubergine and courgette has gone up, as have mushrooms, beetroot, celeriac and ... Potato is now at the heart of quite a few meals, with fried aubergine and field mushrooms as the "fleshy" accompaniments. Lowlights are few and far between, but as per with cookery books if you don't live 5 minutes walk from a farmers market which sells rare breed parsnips you won't be able to do every recipe. That shouldn't stop you buying this book, in fact nothing short of being utterly penniless should stop you buying this book. I hope the series comes out on DVD as watching the last episode left both my partner and myself mourning the loss of a programme that has changed the way we eat, probably forever. The "best bits" vignette at the end was like coming to the end of a holiday - probably very sad of us but it was a poignant moment,sort of "remember that?" . . . . .good memories. HFW should be proud of this - it made us (and probably several thousand other people) think about what we put on our plates and what we choose to eat when we take those decisions. It's no longer "what's in the fridge" - more "what can I make with what's in the fridge"

A brilliant book for vegetarians and non vegetarians alike.
I bought this book even though I'm trying to curb my book buying due to lack of space, and I'm absolutely delighted I did. After years of buying vegetarian cookery books, I felt like I kept seeing variations on a theme, but this book is very different. It's full of imaginative, mouth-watering recipes and so varied that you are bound to be able to cook something from it with what you already have in. I made parsnip and ginger soup and ribollita recently - both of which were gorgeous. There's also a lovely section on comfort food. I made the cauliflower and chick pea curry and froze some to take to work - lovely. I also like the little commentary at the beginning of the recipes with suggestions of variations to the recipes. very good book inspiring to more with veg, not just for veggies
Love that there is a pic for each page unlike other cookbooks. enjoyed the series in tv and inspired me to but book also recomended by a friend. one complaint its missing one of the most inspiring dishes from the series. the advcardo choch desert.
