  • Conan Recolored

A collection of the first eight Marval Conan stories. It's fun to see Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor Smith find their way...although how Conan ever got through any of his many fights without breaking that skinny little Barry Smith nose I have no idea. But of course, if you read other reviews, the big point of contention here is that these Dark Horse reprints recolor the stories... and the results are certainly divisive. I have a few of the original comics for comparison, and while the new colors are certainly more detailed and nuanced and give the art a more modern feel, they pretty much stick to a palatte of rich earth tones. The original comics color gets more creative and exciting with their limited old school capabilities (for example, a character in a dark room lit by a candle might be ...

  • Just Like I Remembered Them !!

I really dug the Conan Comics that first came out in 1970 ! I rode around all over on my bike to pick up all the copies of issue #1 in the South Bay of San Diego area because I knew it was going to be a hit! Funny thing, is that Roy Thomas (the writer of the comics) and Stan Lee (the editor), were hedging their bets on this one! The afterword in this book is worth the price of the book alone! Roy Thomas goes in depth on how the Conan license was obtained, and how the series almost didn't come about, and then was almost cancelled!! The Barry Smith artwork here was far better than anything he had done earlier at Marvel in the Avengers, DD, etc. A Great Buy for this compilation of Conan comics! Michael
