a thoroughly satisfactory read -- delicious, actually
I was looking so forward to the release of this book, that one Sunday afternoon while napping, Stephen L. Carter and I met in my dream. Only Stephen turned out to be a Af. American woman -- confusing of course, but in my eagerness to compliment him/her on "their" previous work I paused not. But ALAS -- Ms. Carter informed me (smiling sympathetically) that she had "repossessed" the book, that she had to rewrite it. She had taken back all the copies. I stared at her, incredulous. Devastated I tried to fully understand, but that tricky dream logic had me, and I awoke needing to call the book store immediately. Hurray -- only a dream. Rah Rah (this, you might note later, has some significance -- remember the rah rah). So, you can see I was READY for this book. And I did thoroughly ... But I wasn't quite as blown away by it as I was by the Emperor of Ocean Park. Perhaps that is because that was my first introduction to the intimate looks at the darker nation. Now, visiting again, I learned a great deal more about the use and abuse of power as it may effect political change, or try. What I did appreciate was the characterization of the Carlyle women: Julia, Vanessa, Jeans. Julia's evolution as a person, wife, mother, human being. I completely loved that the cat is "Rainbow Coalition." Actually, as I write about this book (just finished today) I am thinking better and better of it, as it has left interesting seeds for further thought about the way different elements of society use power. It turns out that he has written not only an excellent novel, but he has offered thoughts on how we may effect change in our lives, in our various spheres --- tricky deal, Mr. Professor! Good Job! I think this book could spark some discussions of race and class -- hopefullly both between and among the darker and paler nations -- I certainly will hope so. I think it might.

An Ambitious Story
I enjoyed reading the book, but it had so many characters without much character that I had a time keeping track of them. Lots of red herrings. I think it may have held together better for me if it was edited down. I would like to have seen more character development and more than 2 characters out of about thirty some that I could care about. I really wondered why some of them were even in the book. The author's first book The Emperor of Ocean Park was really good.I enjoyed reading the book, but it had so many characters without much character that I had a time keeping track of them. This is a very eloquently-written novel. Stephen Carter weaves an intricate and mysterious story that involves some very disparate and interesting characters. A rare novel for our modern day. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a gripping story that cannot be put down till the very end.
