ANIMAL HOUSE is the film that launched National Lampoon as a comedy powerhouse. Developed by the editors at the Harvard Lampoon, the film is a collection of true-life experiences and memories with a great deal of embellishment. Nothing is sacred in this film, in which every gesture, phrase, and song became de rigueur in fraternity houses nationwide after its release. Decadence, debauchery, and delinquency prevail at Delta House, the scourge of the fraternity system at Faber College in 1962. In an effort to rid himself of the troublesome brothers, Dean Wormer (John Vernon) hatches a plan in cahoots with the brown-nosing Greg Marmalard (James Daughton) of rival fraternity Omega to have the Deltas kicked off campus. Unfortunately for them, the determination and drive of the Deltas is more than anyone counted on. In their last stand against the uptight dean, the antiheroes of Delta drink, smoke, romp, frolic, and dance--going out with a bang. This outrageous, much-loved comedy classic features the first major film role of the late, great John Belushi as John "Bluto" Blutarsky, the hard-partying, beer-guzzling champion of Delta house.

A Ground Breaking Great Experience! The 1st. Lemems Flc
National Lampoon's Animal House set the standard for what has become an entire genre of film. National Lampoon transition onto film broke ground on well produced (in defiance of a limited budget) on the "Gross Out - Screwball Comedy". This set the stage for films like Stripes, Ghostbusters, Caddy Shack, Heavy Metal, Spies Like Us and so many more. The direction towards a "Damm the torpedoes full speed ahead" view that brought us true give the people what they want and we can still turn a buck in the major film industry. The crossover of actors with names and comedy that pushed the edge of what can be done on film made it possible for historic classics like The Blues Brothers and Splash! Without the visceral punch Animal House brought us, comedies might have remained in the realm of Billy ... National Lampoon's Animal House set the standard for what has become an entire genre of film. National Lampoon transition onto film broke ground on well produced (in defiance of a limited budget) on the "Gross Out - Screwball Comedy". A small handful of films such as Dr. Strangelove, M.A.S.H. Animal House and others broke through the barrier of appeal to everyone to hit'm right in the tender spot of the funny bone. So many concepts were tried and worked in Animal House that today, all film takes for granted. Example: The soundtrack, we usually don't expect the music score of a comedy to be nothing more than an adjunct to the film except for musicals, but in Animal House, director John Landis requested that Elmer Bernstein, known for soundtracks from films like "True Grit" to make as he was versed in, to create a true "collegenet" score that could also play to the levity of the film without sounding anything close to silly making the score an actor of the film itself! This was the first time this approach was used to a score in a comedy and led to a LOT of work for Bernstein, going on to create scores for films like Meatballs, Going Ape!, Trading Places, Vegas Vacation and more! Without National Lampoon's Animal House, the world would be a lot less funny, as if the Germans had bombed Pearl Harbor. I give it a 9 on a ten point scale.
