Scholarly Review of "The Road to Stalingrad".....DVD
I recently purchased the DVD titled: "The Road to Stalingrad". The DVD arrived safely and it was thoroughly entertaining. What I liked the most about the DVD was seeing never before footage of the battles on the Russian Front between 1941-1942---up to the time of Stalingrad. This DVD is not for the person that knows very little about WWII, and the war in Russia. The two hour DVD does not do it justice. There is so many more details to explain how the two dictators became arch enemies---that would take many more hours to explain. The DVD does a great job in summarizing the battles and gives the viewer a general idea of the intricate issues that led to the war. I particularly enjoyed the varied points of view between the Nazis and the Soviets. The movie does a great job ... I recently purchased the DVD titled: "The Road to Stalingrad". I particularly enjoyed the varied points of view between the Nazis and the Soviets. The movie does a great job of comparison and contrast. Many times, the narration goes between the Nazis and Hitler's motives and tactics, then, flips to Stalin and the Soviet motives. A great contribution to historical footage is then portrayed as the narration changes sides. I also enjoyed the organization of the movie. It starts with the beginning of the war and gives a good general summary of what led up to the war between the Nazis and Soviets. This is why I recommend "The Road to Stalingrad" for the student of history and those that have a deeper understanding of the complexities that led to this conflict. Many of the terms and summaries in the the narration are not detailed explanation of issues, such as the 'reason' Stalin had a long history of not trusting his generals in the 1930's; therefore, sanctioning there executions. This in turn, led to poor leadership for the Soviet Union at the time of 1941. I wish that "The Road to Stalingrad" actually had more footage and went in to details about the entire battle of Stalingrad. However, this movie is exactly what the title indicates---the road to Stalingrad. I recommend it to everyone and suggest a little reading on some of the details of the Eastern Front be read before watching......

Good WW2 Documentary
An excellent documentary starting with Germany before invading the Soviet Union all the way up to Stalingrad. This documentary looks like it was made in the 1980s but had it was very comprehensive and details I never knew about. The only thing I didn't like was that there was a Part 2 but it was just the same video from Part 1. Strange, but overall it's good.
