About this product

Product Information

Few publications illustrate so comprehensively what American men, women, and children wore in the 1940s than the Sears catalogs of those years, when the company's fashions typified the tastes of the American mainstream. This book is a compilation of 122 fully illustrated and captioned pages selected and reproduced from rare copies of Sears catalogs of the World War II era. Over 120 large-format pages have been carefully reprinted on high-quality glossy stock. They reveal in sharp detail the broad range of clothing fashions available during a period when wartime gasoline rationing made mail-order shopping reach new heights of popularity. Hundreds of accurately detailed drawings depict articles of clothing and personal accessories, including hats, overcoats, shoes, dresses, sportswear, undergarments, neckties, and more. Styles for children range from play clothes to "Sunday best." Men's clothing reflects the conservativism in male fashions during the period. Women's wear ranges from slacks, newly popular with women in the workforce, to dresses with plenty of "Oomph." Here is a richly revealing document that historians of costume and readers interested in fashion, social history, and Americana will find endlessly fascinating. JoAnne Olian, curator of the Costume Collection at the Museum of the City of New York, has written an introduction that appraises the fashions of the 1940s and the many ways in which they reflected the times.

Purchase didn t arrive (USPS fault), and after a week or so, seller readily refunded my money. That was great. Package just showed up 1.5 months later! Each of the containers had a clearly faked half-open seal and was rancid. Also long expired. When I reached out to let him know, seller said he only discovered this afterward and tossed any similar stock. This is everyone s friendly reminder to ask for the batch code before buying.

  • 40's Fashions for Men, Women & Children

Over the years, I've managed to collect a few vintage catalogs as reference books for selling collectibles on eBay . . . they are often hard to find and can be rather costly. This book, however, looks as if they have taken all my favorite pages from various Sears catologs and combined them into an easy-to-browse, lightweight reference guide. You can't help but find the pages interesting--the styles are so diffent from today and some of the ensembles are almost cartoonish by modern standards! The pages are simply duplicates of catalog pages and so they include detailed descriptions along with their 1940's prices. Obviously, you'd expect this book to show dresses and suits, but it goes quite a bit further including lots of jewelry, shoes, belts, purses, snow suits, ...

  • Everyday Fashions of the Forties

This I have found to be one of those books you keep going back to time and time again. As part of a couple who love the fifties music and who are reliving the fifties I purchased 'Everyday Fashions of the Fifties'. I make all of my clothes and most of my partners. We also have an interest in the forties which is why I purchased this book, I hoped it would be as good as the fifties one and it is. I am able to look at the styles etc from the forties and make clothes for myself and my partner for the forties dances and weekenders that we will be going to. It gives you in insight to the fashions that were about in the forties. It covers mens, womens and childrens fashions of the individual years. This is given at the top right hand corner of each page. The details in the ...
