About this product

Product Information

One of Japan's longest-running role-playing game series takes its adventures onto Game Boy Advance in an enhanced remake of 1994's Tales of Phantasia, originally released in Japan on Super Famicom. As in previous games in the Phantasia series, combat takes place in real time as both sides fight each other from a horizontal viewpoint. The main character is swordsman Cress Albane, who begins a quest to find those responsible for the death of his parents and the destruction of his village. Cress is joined by neighbor Chester Barklight and friend Mint Adnade, who both bring talents such as archery and healing to the party.

The structure will be familiar to most console role-playing game fans, as players explore their surroundings on a overhead-view world map, with random encounters appearing at various points along the way. Once a battle commences, players initiate attacks using the directional pad instead of navigating through menus. Other features include a monster dictionary, allowing players to track each creature encountered during their journey, and a cooking system that encourages players to create health- and magic-restoring recipes from ingredients found throughout the land. For its handheld debut, the game includes new dialogue, events, and other surprises.

  • Tales of Phantasia for Game Boy Advance

Great game ^_^ I decided to buy it because I played Tales of Symphonia (which I love) and wanted to see what the first game in the Tales series was like, and it is one of the greatest RPGs I've ever played! The story line is rather simple compared to the other "Tales of" games, but still well developed and has great character development. The dungeon design is great for it's time. There are also some enjoyable side-quests and sub-events. "Let's Go Arche" mini-game after you beat the game is probably my favorite feature of the game. Definably a must buy for fans of the series. That's about it *_* I absolutely love the battle system, where you control one character and the AI controls the rest on the battle screen, but you can choose how the AI works by choosing what attacks and spells the ...

  • Long RPG Resurrected for GBA

I've never played the Original "Tales of Phantasia," so I can't compare the game to it. In fact, I've never played anything in the "Tales" series. Regardless, I enjoy this game. I'm yet to complete it, but so far it has been filled with exploring and fighting. Unlike many new RPGs, "Phantasia" gives you a relatively high degree of freedom to roam the world early. Some places are off limits, but you can travel to towns and caves out of order if you wish. This is a plus for exploring and finding treasures sooner rather than later. The battle environment is a 2D space where you control the main character. The others may be issued spell command and change formations, but generally you will just let them perform on their own with the strategy you lay out. This makes the battles ...

  • Great game!

I love the unique battle system, and the storyline is pretty awesome too. The puzzles in the dungeons are easy in some areas and kind of annoying in others, but overall I can't complain too much. The sidequests aren't retarded like a lot of games, and the character development (although a bit juvenile) has most all the right elements. It's humorous, dramatic, and even has some tragic moments that make you feel for the characters (but certain scenes could have used some definite improvements). I'd give it a really high 4+ out of 5, if not a absolute 5 considering the competition (as in most GBA games don't make use of the system like they should).

  • Story for the Ages

This is the first Tales game released in North America. I really like this game despite the fact that it has shown its age since it has been on multiple systems. I enjoyed the story, the development of the characters, and the gameplay is solid. The flow of the game is also great with plot twists here and there and what made me buy it was that I am a serious Tales gamer as well I had shortly before buying it found out it was a sequel to another Tales game released for the Gamecube. That is why I had to have it.
