    Incredibly complex but very capable

    The Toshiba RD-XS32SU DVD/HDD recorder works very well. However, it's advanced features such as editing, are incredibly complex and difficult to use. You practically need the user manual in your hands while trying to create a playlist to burn to a DVD from the HDD. I really like the fact that you can specify exactly what bitrate you want to record at to exactly pack a DVD at the highest possible video quality. I also really like the fact that you can specify 4:3 or 16:9 recording explicitly. This is very important when dubbing over from a 16:9 miniDV recorder. The video quality is first rate. If I had to find fault with it, besides complexity, it would have to be how slow it is when loading up the HDD or DVD when turned on or when inserting a new disk. It says "Loading" for what ...

    If you lose your remote you lose the ability to burn DVDs

    Pros: It works. If you press record and have forggoten to insert a blank DVD the unit will so an automatic switch to Hard Drive record. Cons: Even though there are controls on the recorder itself, I have not found a way to access any of the higher commands or even finalize a DVD without the original remote control. Buying a universal remote will not solve the problem because there are special function keys to access some menus. When adding chapters to a title your video will pause for about 2 seconds instead of playing straight through. If you have the auto chapter function set for every 5 minutes the pauses get annoying when watching a 30 minute video.

    Be careful. Always reseach and ask questions

    I bought this dvd recorder hoping it would enable me to record shows I recorded on my cable dvr to to the dvd recorder(if that makes sense). So far,no such luck. The two instruction manuals confuse me. I'll try again and if that does'nt work oh well. It it works for me than I'll change my review. It works,it just does'nt work the way I want. When buying a dvd recorder DO YOUR RESEARCH and ask questions! You live and you learn.

    It works great! We are able to view dvds and make dvds from our video camera! A wonderful, easy to use product!
