3 poignant vignettes about youth in life transition
If a friend or acquaintance asked you to choose something from the realm of Japanese animation that could have a profound effect upon a viewer unfamiliar to this illustrative craft, this short film "5 Centimeters Per Second" by Makoto Shinkai would be an excellent selection. The film is woven into 3 breathtaking, visually stunning, spellbinding, 20-minute narratives about the interactions of 3 central figures beginning when they were children. You will witness their young love blossoming, then slowly, achingly receding as life joys, sorrows, dashed expectations, and losses evolve into nettlesome truths associated with life maturation, obligations, and adult responsibilities. This film deftly portrays the beauty and harmony of present moment, place, and space. And it ... After ADV films decision to not renew its rights to the film, it sat in limbo until it was picked up last year by Bandai Entertainment & CrunchyRoll USA. Now newly remastered English track by Bang-Zoom Entertainment, all the interviews and behind the scenes are available with English subs which until now was only available on the Japanese Limited Edition Box Set. A truly beautiful film that deeply moved me...
Due to the extremely limited distribution of this film due to ADV's untimely demise I had not been able to actually sit down and watch 5cm/sec until it arrived in the mail after I had purchased it. What I expected to be a soppy slice-of-life turned out to be a quite brilliant offering that reflected the cruel indifference of fate and love. I would recommend this to anyone with a soul, especially fans of Miyazaki or indie-flick romance. Best Animated Movie Ever
Not the longest movie ever, and some people do dislike the ending, but it has become my favorite animated movie. If you see clips or screenshot, it's pretty clear that the movie is very, very pretty. And the music composed by Tenmen fits very well with the overall theme as well. You may or may not like the story, but there is no dispute that watching the movie is a visual feast. The artwork through the whole movie was amazing. The amount of detail the put in the background astounds me.
