About this product

Product Information

The tale of two women: the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth, who ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, back in the thirties. Their southern-style cafe offered good barbecue, good coffee, and all kinds of love and laughter--not to mention an occasional murder.

A book that should be required reading.

This book has a wonderful cast of very believable characters. You are taken from when Idgie is a young child thru very elderly in the deep South. There are love stories, murder, humor, tragedy and forbidden (at the time) love. The Great Depression is a part of it, as are present day times and peeves. The love that happens between black Help and white 'boss'. There is even a section of recipes at the back, including Fried Green Tomatoes. Every bit as good as To Kill a Mockingbird.

  • Funny and sad all rolled up together!

Idgy is a fun tomboyish character that you will learn to love immediately. Her friend Ruth is just as lovable but opposite in personality. Ruth is dainty and feminine. The book explores more of the characters personalities and history than the movie (which i also love) does. I learned alot about the south in the early part of the centry. The general attitude toward blacks and the poverty they lived in. Idgy is loveable for many reasons, but her devotion towards her 'colored' friends whome she treats as family is endearing and a true character strength. Overall i recommend the book, great read for book clubs as a lengthy discussion on characters and their motives can be had. A+ book.
