  • Wonderful biography, beware of some conclusions

    This biography of Mary Stuart of Scotland is wonderfully written, carefully researched, and a great read for readers well acquainted with Mary's history as well as those unfamiliar with it. Guy takes a different approach from previous biographies, debunking the mantra that Mary ruled from the heart while Elizabeth ruled from the head and showing Mary as a shrewed politician. And the story itself, of course, is powerful and sad. The book does a good job of placing Mary's actions within larger context - the European politics as well as Scottish internal struggles. He shows what an impossible situation the young queen was facing and her achievement in dealing with it well for the first four years of her personal reign. However, I found some of the author's conclusions less than convincing, ...
