About this product

Product Information

In her most eagerly anticipated novel yet, Elizabeth George brings back Scotland Yard's Thomas Lynley to investigate a ruthless crime. After the senseless murder of his wife, Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley retreated to Cornwall, where he has spent six solitary weeks hiking the bleak and rugged coastline. But no matter how far he walks, no matter how exhausting his days, the painful memories of Helen's death do not diminish. On the forty-third day of his walk, at the base of a cliff, Lynley discovers the body of a young man who appears to have fallen to his death. The closest town, better known for its tourists and its surfing than its intrigue, seems an unlikely place for murder. However, it soon becomes apparent that a clever killer is indeed at work, and this time Lynley is not a detective but a witness and possibly a suspect. The head of the vastly understaffed local police department needs Lynley's help, though, especially when it comes to the mysterious, secretive woman whose cottage lies not far from where the body was discovered. But can Lynley let go of the past long enough to solve a most devious and carefully planned crime?

Reviews
As readers of George's top-notch mysteries have come to expect, the plotlines are dense, the characters complex, and there are enough dark secrets to fill Pandora's box., One of George's best books in years. . . . George plays the cross-eddies of a dozen or so characters, making each so vivid. . . . The return is to be immersed in a small village in Cornwall in which everyone's life becomes an open book., Careless in Red is no mere whodunnit. Everyone in this novel has something to hide and something to admit....George lifts us up again. There is hope of renewal, if only we are strong enough to accept it., A tale of fathers and son, of revenge served cold, and perhaps, of the perfect crime. But at its heart, it's a meditation on the importance of fighting every day for even a single, tiny scrap of redemption., Readers who value writing that is intelligent, surprising, sexy, funny, compassionate and wise should find Careless in Red a delight., Stick with Careless in Red for the deftly drawn local characters, the alluring descriptions of Cornish country and custom, and for a fiendishly clever surprising ending., Elizabeth George's Careless in Red is a mystery wrapped in a psychological enigma, which has become true to form for Ms. George....the classic scene of her favorite detective team probing the whys and hows of violent death, yet she has put a twist in that trail....It's a chaotic and fascinating mix of the kind of which Ms. George excels and she manages to tantalize the reader....Ms. George has outdone herself., Will Make New Readers Instant Fans Who Will Then Be Tempted to Read All of George's Lynley Novels., One of the most powerful, beautifully nuanced and honest novels to appear in ages. . . . A portrayal of love and loss and secrets and family . . . I didn't want it to end. When it does, this time most readers will be smiling.

Everything received as listed and in new condition. Seller had good communication and was prompt in delivery. The only thing I’d suggest is better packing. It was delivered in an unpadded manila envelope which arrived ripped exposing part of the package. Thankfully there was no damage to the contents other than a slightly bent corner of the photo book. But other than that, great service and I’d order through seller again. I’d still give 5 stars but hope for better packing next time.

  • Careless in Red by Elizabeth George (2008)

Elizabeth George is such a good writer that I read everything she writes. This book did not disappoint--it's as good or better than others. It's a Thomas Lynley mystery, but Lynley is drawn into the case against his will. It is he who discovers the body while he's walking along the Cornish coast in an attempt to assuage his grief over the tragic murder of his pregnant wife. He's at a crossroad--not certain he wants to remain in New Scotland Yard, but the mystery slowly pulls him in. The victim is a handsome young man whose charm (and encounters) with women is well known. There is no lack of suspects who might have wished him harm for revenge or other reasons. Depending on how good the reader is at solving murder mysteries before the denouement, you may realize who the killer is before ...

  • Elizabeth Georges "Careless in Red"

Well we finally got Elizabeth back after to pretty awful books. The two prior ones were an exercise in the real world according to George. I hated them and felt manipulated after I read thirteen in a row. I think she hit a home-run with this one. Its complex, intriguing, and brings out her ability to describe relationships and their many cubby holes. The story surrounds the surfing word in England and She does a great job of defining the world of surfing from the old and young folks view. The plot is moving and the characters have great depth and complexity to their personalities and feelings. The remorseful Lynley shows up and the characters fit into a great story line. I really love Elizabeth George's books and It's one you should not miss.

  • Not her best.

This book is far too long. George writes as if she is getting paid by the word. She has too many extraneous characters who were not good red herrings and did nothing to advancethe plot. It was easy to figure out -- not much of a whodunit. For her first after Helen's death, I expected more. She's making Barbara waaaaay too slovenly, which is ompletely unnecessary. She introduced a new female cop who is pretty interesting. George's usual sharp characterizations are sorely missing. Do not under circumstances pay full price for this book.

  • Great read

The author writes compelling stories of murder and investigations
