Director Ron Howard casts comedian Jim Carrey in the title role in this live-action adaptation of the famous Christmas tale by Dr. Seuss, giving this rendition of HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS a delightfully manic spin. Carrey is virtually unrecognizable in his elaborate green makeup, but his anarchic comic touch is unmistakable. He manages to fully embody the grumpy title character, while still supplying his own comedic touches, and it is his performance that makes the film a treat for adults and children alike. The candy-colored set design for the town of Whoville and the jubilant score contribute to the overall feeling of innocuous fantasy that the Grinch disrupts with his dastardly deeds. The familiar story of the Grinch stealing every present in town on Christmas Eve has been expanded to incorporate flashbacks to the Grinch's childhood, which serve to explain his hostility toward the Whos. As Cindy Lou-Who, a little girl so sweet she sees goodness even in the Grinch, young Taylor Momsen strikes just the right note of adorable ingenuousness. Howard gets the performance the film needs from her, as her character makes the Grinch's eventual change of heart both believable and touching.

    Love this movie!!!

    This movie is such a great remake of the original animated classic. Technically it's a it's a remake of the original book by Dr. Seuss. Jim Carrey's interpretation of the Grinch is phenomenal. The characters are interesting and the story plot is very intriguing. Jim Carrey comedy is just what makes the whole movie worth Wild. Overall, I recommend this movie very much.

    Get the 1966 Chuck Jones-directed version instead.

    My wife asked me to pick this up. I'll say it up-front. Personally, I'm not a fan. If you want true Seuss-y enjoyment, you can get a copy of the original How The Grinch Stole Christmas! (with the exclamation-point) on DVD (with extras) and it includes the almost as great Horton Hears A Who, both of which had the direct-input and approval of Dr. Seuss. Screenwriters Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman (and, I'm certain, an uncredited squad of fixers and hacks) added an unnecessary back-story to the Grinch in an attempt to give the miserable SOB "motive" and to make him, for some reason, more sympathetic. They give him a public-humiliation in grade school, something with which any viewer can relate, but even in that they hedge their bets, making him a vicious little monster as an infant as if ...

    A movie that is fun for the whole family.

    Saw this when it first came out, Still a very good movie, Now I have grand kids and I want it on hand. It has good leads and a fine supporting cast and a great story. A good screenplay and director. It is what I call a timeless movie.
