A sleek thriller about insecurity, infidelity, and murder, BORN TO KILL, based on a novel by James Gunn, is a dark and gritty melodrama that probes the ever-lurking dark side of human nature and the results of giving in to those impulses. The film opens with Sam (played by a brilliantly evil Lawrence Tierney) committing a double murder in a fit of jealousy. The bodies are soon discovered by the beautiful, wealthy Helen (Claire Trevor) who, not wanting to be involved, flees town and doesn't report the crime. In a neat twist, Helen and Sam soon find themselves on the same train, wildly attracted to each other. Visiting her estate, Sam learns Helen is engaged to be married, so he goes after her sister Georgia (Audrey Long), marrying her. But it isn't long before Sam's old life--and the murder he committed--comes back to haunt him. This inevitability, along with his insatiable jealousy of Helen, pushes Sam to new heights of brutality. The twists and turns in the story are supported beautifully by Robert de Grasse's moody cinematography. This unflinching film noir is a little-known Robert Wise gem.

Lawrence Tierney Is One Bad Dude
"Born to Kill" is a real, crime psycho-drama. Lawrence Tierney plays a mentally disturbed man who gets the urge to kill every time someone crosses him. He marries a rich girl for her money but really loves Claire Trevor because she is just like him. There's a detective on his trail and the chase to the conclusion is on. This is classic, film noir melodrama. One of the standouts in the genre. The actors are great, the direction is tight, and the story is intriguing. Lawrence Tierney at his terrifying best.
Lawrence Tierney was probably the most terrifying man to ever appear on film. (A Hollywood director once described Tierney as having no light in his eyes.) Without special effects, little gore, little on screen violence, he scares the H out of you. And Claire Trevor (the queen of noir) and Elisha Cook Jr. are also perfectly cast. This is an amazing film. If you like film noir, see Born to Kill.

One of the Greatest Villains of San Francisco noir film
Lawrence Tierney has to be one of the greatest villains of San Francisco noir films. He is so evil you want see him “get it.” Elisha Cook jr. has another strong performance as a character actor, he was the “gunsel” in Maltese Falcon. Having played in Sunset and Ocean Beach sand dunes as a child I could feel sand in my shoes in the final dune scenes.

I love all the film noir movies of the '40's and early '50's so I naturally wanted this movie. This movie is one of the best film noir has to offer. Laurence Tierney, the quiet yet maniacal killer, Claire Trevor, can't stand him and yet can't stay away from him. This movie has everything! I would recommend this movie to all old movie buffs!
