About this product

Product Information

A critically acclaimed addition to a critically acclaimed franchise, WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2008 for the Xbox 360 (as well as the PS3) introduced a whole range of new features for fans of top-notch wrestling games. The WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw series has long set the standard for wrestling video games, consistently upping the ante to lead the industry in the areas of gameplay, visuals, and technical superiority. Developed by Yuke’s and Amaze Entertainment for publisher THQ, WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2008 was the first game in the series to be released for all seventh generation game consoles. In addition to the Microsoft Xbox 360, WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2008 was available for the Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2), PlayStation 3 (PS3), Nintendo Wii (with Wii U compatibility), and, as a testament to its popular appeal, even handheld systems like the PlayStation Portable and the Nintendo DS (with 3DS compatibility). Among the improvements over previous installments to the franchise are the game’s fighting styles. Classifying wrestlers into categories, each has access to type-specific abilities, which adds another layer of complexity to the gameplay. The fighting styles included are Powerhouse, Showman, Hardcore, Dirty, Brawler, High-Flyer, Submission, and Technical. Powerhouse wrestlers like Batista are able to break pins with a single button press, execute devastating moves like the Hammer Throw, and activate Rampage mode when their energy meter is maxed out. This special ability makes it impossible for opponents to break out of grapple moves and also makes them completely impervious to strikes. Highlights of the other fighting styles include imitating opponents as the Showman, sitting on a pinned opponent to bash them on the head as the Brawler, and executing eye pokes and low blows to the torso as a Dirty wrestler. WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2008 also features a roster of new wrestlers, extreme rules, and other hardcore features from ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling). ECW superstar characters included in the game are Tommy Dreamer, CM Punk, Elijah Burke, and Kelly Kelly. Weapons are collected from under the ring or via a ladder from high above it, with a new weapon wheel system having been introduced to aid in switching between the various weapon options. These include classic favorites like folding tables and chairs and 2x4s wrapped with barbed wire with the spectacular new ability to set them on fire. Other superstar wrestlers not available in previous games but introduced as playable characters in WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2008 include Cryme Tyme, MVP, Ashley, Kenny Dykstra, Marcus Cor Von, Sandman, and Sabu, with Michelle McCool making a comeback after her first appearance in WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2006. The character customization mode allows players to create new wrestlers from scratch and, exclusively on the Xbox 360, even add custom soundtracks to their character’s custom entrance. WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2008 for the Xbox 360 has been praised for its stunning visual effects, including realistic lighting and crowds, as well as its smooth and consistent frame rate. A story mode features aggressive voicemails from rivals, cut scenes, and backstage interactions along with statistics and achievements for the season. Wrestlers also grow their popularity rating by pursuing ventures outside of the ring, such as film roles, interviews, and autograph signings. Carrying the torch of this franchise’s reputation from its late 2007 release date, WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2008 for the Xbox 360 adds its own improvements and makes for a fun and replayable gaming experience.

  • WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 featuring ECW

WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 featuring ECW is an amazing addition to the hit selling wrestling franchise. With outstanding new additions and improvements, '08 dominates '07 in many ways. There aren't any new match types, except for ECW extreme rules match, but I have to say this match is the best part of the game. Extreme rules allows you to choose, before you start the match, the weapons that are going to be under the ring, for example you can replace the default kendo stick with a guitar. Also, only for this kind of match, there is a scrolling wheel that will let you choose what weapons you want to take out. Not like SvR 2007, garbage cans, crutches, etc. aren't only seen in the audience area. Plus, you can take out more than one table, which in '07, you could only get more than one table ...

  • WWE 2008: So almost there!

The WWE games still might suffer from awkward hit detection and now minor targeting issues, but the series has never looked better. For every thing that could have been better, there's another feature that makes up for it. Kennedy's entrance? Snap! Best CAW ever? Snap! 24/7 mode? Others hate it, I love it! That roleplaying feel is perfect in my honest opinion; it adds a depth to your character that I believe every game should have had (How many times have I wanted to send Snitsky out on long-term or break Benjamin Shelton's ankles clean off?). Really, you just have to try it for yourself before totally trusting in other reviews. But maybe I'm just biased on wrestling games; I've owned every one of them since the NES, after all.

  • Great Game Could Be Better

Let me First say after playing this game its great. You can finally upload your own music as a entrance which is something I have been waiting for. Also there's so much to do in carrier mode its a very great game. New submission controls, very easy for beginners to novice. The downside, if you bought last years I feel the interaction was a little better. You don't really get to pick your own way by answering questions like last year. More of a pre-assembled path which is ok. Also alot of the same commentary and after playing last years it gets old hearing Jr and King saying the same stuff over again this year. But all in all I give it a 8.5 out of 10.

  • WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 (Xbox 360)

Overall this is a decent game if your into wrestling. Graphics's are great and the 24/7 mode is pretty cool. Aside from just having matches, you also have to play mini-games in order to raise levels (stamina, speed, strength ect.). Which has it's pluses and minuses over last years assigning points where ever you see fit. The roster now includes ECW, but even with the addition it seems alittle thin over last years roster. My general feeling is that this game was rushed and offers very little improvement over 2007's SD vs. Raw. If you dont own either, I'd say buy 2007, it's basically the same thing and you can get it dirt cheap (under $10). But if you have to have it, wait for a deal, especially if you already own 2007, because like I said, it's more like an add on than a whole new title. ...

  • Time consuming, but still a good game.

If you're looking for fast achievements, this isn't the best game for it. You can get some of them pretty quickly, but most of them require some decent grinding to get. If you enjoy wrestling games, this is pretty solid, but, of course, has its flaws. Does not have a way to update the rosters, no DLC for new characters or to get new music packs or anything like that. The amount of matches is incredible, but the way the matches in story mode go are limited. You're not likely to see a Buried Alive Match in story mode. Not to mention that even if you win in story mode, the scenes after the match make it look like you lost. Over all, not an instant classic, but not too bad, if you can find it cheap.
