Oil field oil pump n scale

This is a nice oil pump which will make any layout look great my son built the HO scale one and weathered it and bought the motor to drive the pump and it looks sharp .

  • Top critical review

Walters N Scale Oil Pump is, well, a chore.

I model in N Scale, Union Pacific and BNSF. Situated in Wyoming, energy is obviously a key part of industry, especially gas and coal. As for scenery and buildings etc, I have both old and "new" energy modeled. So it made sense to add an oil pump, which one sees a lot of in this region. I'm an experienced modeler, not only with trains but scale aircraft as well. This was a very difficult kit to assemble, and the instructions weren't very helpful. Perhaps an HO scale version would be easier. I did get it completed and it's on the layout. (awaiting some additional fencing as the stuff provided in the kit stinks) But again, it's on the layout and looks good. So, not for inexperienced modelers and I think experienced modelers will find it a bit frustrating.

  • Gears will not mesh smoothly

I love the look, which is good. However, I also love animating what can be. I have actually bought 6 of these, trying all sorts of ways to make the gears mesh smoothly. Apparently, the Chinese manufacturer does not have a good engineer. I am working with machinist now who believes he can make a gear box that will work. The time put in will cost between $400-500 to make one that will work. Walthers is looking into the situation. But I haven't heard they are getting close to a solution yet. The story is still unfolding, they might update the tooling so it will work (hopefully). I have seen lots of examples of the HO version work, just not the N scale.

  • Hard to assemble

I have put hundreds of models etc. together and this was really hard. The parts are very small, and the instructions are not the best. I even had to remake a few parts myself to get it finished. It does look good when done and adding the motor makes it a great addition to my layout.

  • Need nerves of steel

The gears are really rough, parts are very small and I received the kit with broken parts because the spurs are thicker than the parts and puts a bind on them causing the part to break. Then other parts break just touching them. 40 years ago Walthers was the best and couldn't hardly afford anything, now they are reasonably priced but now the quality has gone down.
