The Chalk Garden is magnificent in its production and direction. The key actors are superbly selected for their cast roles. Extremely underrated.
See this film. Hayley Mills and Deborah Kerr are mastertful. No one remembers this movie, and it is a terrible shame. The synopsis is often not in touch with the reality of the story.

Unusual film with Hayley Mills as a disturbed teenager
This is a very unusual film. Hayley Mills is cast against type as an unlikable, possibly disturbed teenager. She was very believable. There are some comedic moments in the beginning, when Hayley scares away a potential nanny candidate --- one in a long line of many. When Deborah Kerr arrives and stands up to both Laurel (Hayley) and Laurel's domineering grandmother, it looks like this will be THE SOUND OF MUSIC, with the sympathetic nanny earning the child's love. But Laurel threatens to ruin her nanny and goes about it with such malice that suddenly you get the feeling this may be THE BAD SEED, particularly when the nanny (Kerr) starts acting nervous and it becomes clear she does in fact have a deep, dark secret in her past. This secret, however, gives her insight into Laurel's ... This is a very unusual film. Hayley Mills is cast against type as an unlikable, possibly disturbed teenager. She was very believable. Fantastic and under appreciated.
A movie with Hayley, her father, and Deborah Kerr is bound to be good. Hayley's talent shows as she acted a girl acting. The plot is interesting, it pulls you in by the heart. I like the views of western England.

I FIRST SAW THIS MOVIE WHEN I WAS MS MILLS AGE AND WAS NOT IMPRESSED. WOW, WHAT YEARS DO TO YOUR PERSPECTIVE. THE FOUR MAIN ACTORS WERE SUPERB, THE STORY WAS SUPERB. THIS MOVIE SHOULD BE ON DVD. THIS WAS FILMED IN ENGLAND, AND WHAT EVER AWARDS THEY GIVE OUT BOTH DEBORAH KERR AND HALEY MILLS, SHOULD HAVE WON.
