JOHNNY GIMBLE - "Country's Favorite Fiddler" Johnny grew up on a farm in East Texas, near Tyler, with 4 musical brothers. He has been married since '49 to Barbara Kemp from Gatesville, Texas. Johnny and Barbara have 3 children: Dick and twins Cyndi and Gay. Dick teaches commercial music at McLennan Community College, Waco. He & Marilynn have 3 children. Cyndy works at St. Bernard Ski Lodge, Taos, New Mexico. Gay is a teacher in Austin. She & Joe have one daughter. Radio - At age 13, Johnny and his brothers played on KGKB, Tyler. After high school, he joined the Shelton brothers on KWKH, Shreveport, Louisiana. He played in the campaign band for Jimmie Davis during his successful bid for governor of Louisiana. After serving in WW II, Johnny worked with various Texas radio and dance bands until he joined "Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys" in 1949. He settled in Dallas in the early fifties and began doing radio and TV shows with Bill and Jim Boyd and "The Big D Jamboree". During the '80's & '90's, he appeared many times on Garrison Keillor's "Prairie Home Companion". TV - In Waco, Johnny had his own "Johnny Gimble & the Homefolks" show on KWTX-TV for three years. He was staff fiddler on NBC's "5-Star Jubilee" from Springfield, Mo. in '61. While in Nashville from '68 to '78, he made recordings and appeared on many TV shows. Johnny became staff fiddler on "Good Ole Nashville Music", was a member of the "Million Dollar Band" on "HEE HAW" and has performed several times on "Nashville Now" and TNN's "Prime Time Country". He has made more appearances on "Austin City Limits" than any other individual. Movies - He appeared in the film "Nashville", and with Willie Nelson in "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Songwriter". He also portrayed Bob Wills in Clint Eastwoods "Honky Tonk Man". Recordings - In 1948 Johnny recorded with Roberts Bro's Rhythmaires in Corpus Christi, Texas. He subsequently recorded several sessions with MGM with Bob Wills and in the early fifties in Dallas with Lefty Frizzell, Marty Robbins, Ray Price and others. During his 10 years in Nashville, Gimble made his living in the studio recording with everyone from "Wills to Willie" . . Country Artists Merle Haggard, Charley Pride, Chet Atkins, Porter & Dolly, Conway & Loretta, George & Tammy, Johnny Rodriquez, Connie Smith & George Strait. Even Joan Baez & Paul McCartney have featured his fiddle and mandolin. Awards - Johnny was voted "Instrumentalist of the Year" by the Country Music Association in 1975 and has received that award 3 times since. He was named "Fiddler of the Year" by The Academy of Country Music eight times. Nominated 3 times for the Grammy, he has won twice for his work on Country Instrumental of the Year with Asleep at the Wheel. In 1995 he was declared a national treasure by the National Endowment for the Arts, and was presented the Fellowship Heritage Award by Hillary Clinton. In 2005 he was named Musician of the year by the Texas Congress and inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame After more than 50 years Gimble is still "Fiddlin' Around". During all these years supporting the top artists in the country he has found the time to record seven albums of his own. He is "on the road" now with his son Dick and his granddaughter Emily - "The Gimbles" -doing festivals, concerts and dances.
