About this product

Product Information

An original, unconventional musical boasting some of MGM's finest talents of the time, LES GIRLS tells the tale of a performing troupe of three charming girls who discovered that their romantic adventures got in the way of their act. The dynamite combination of Barry (Gene Kelly), Angele (Taina Elg), Joy (Mitzi Gaynor), and Sybil (Kay Kendall) are the former members of Barry Nichols and Les Girls, a popular European cabaret act. Years after the group is dissolved, the now Lady Sybil Wren faces a libel suit after publishing a scandalous account of the group in her memoirs. All the former partners are called into court to give their own widely contradicting accounts of those long-ago events, whereupon the film becomes a sort of musical RASHOMON. LES GIRLS is a dazzling adaptation of Vera Caspary's novel, featuring Cole Porter's last score.

  • Anti-feminist storyline, but great music and dancing.

Risque musical for adults. It has catchy tunes and great dancing. It also has attempted suicide, alcoholism, a lawsuit...and a happy ending! Not a storyline to be taken seriously, since it's apparently OK for men to lie to their girlfriends and cheat on them...but when a woman acts this way toward her boyfriend, it's practically unforgiveable. It's a good thing Gene Kelly is so attractive and charming, because otherwise his character would be offensive. If you keep in mind that this is only a movie, made when gender roles were different, you can enjoy the music, the comedy, and the costumes. Due to its anti-feminist philosophy, this is one of the few musicals that would probably appeal more to males than to females.

  • Will the True Love Story Please Step Forward?

Les Girls (1957) explores the lives of three dancing girls (Mitzi Gaynor, Kay Kendall, and Taina Elg) and their relationships with their boss/fellow dancer, Barry Nichols (Gene Kelly). The plot is constructed around the testimony given by the characters at a court trial held when one of the girls accuses another of libel in her tell-all book about her experiences in the dancing troupe Barry Nichols and Les Girls. But the defendant and her accuser swear two different stories are true. Each claims Barry was in love with the other girl. Then Barry takes the stand and lets the surprising truth be known. Slightly reminiscent of Citizen Kane (if Orson Welles had sung and danced with three beautiful girls in a French revue) in its analysis of how people view events differently and fail to ...

  • Boring

The musical numbers were uninteresting and monotonous.

  • Les Girls -classic comedy/mystery.

A hilarious movie made in 1957, set in Paris. Plot is a bit like a detective story . Various interesting twists are revealed as you see events re-enacted from 3 different points of view. Loved the characters played by the gorgeous Kay Kendall & cheeky Mitzi Gaynor. One of my favorite films of the era, enjoyed it even more on second viewing.
