From conflict comes artistic brilliance.
With a catalog of albums that displayed Andy Partridge's distinctive style with an undertow of punk, witty rock and Beatle-esque pop, it seemed XTC could have rested on their accomplishments. But add in the production of mastermind Todd Rundgren, and the skillful drumming of Prairie Prince, the band explored even more uncharted territory on Skylarking with critically-acclaimed results. Given a fresher sound and a thematic running order, Skylarking is a milestone in XTC's great career. It didn't come easily, though. The friction between Andy Partridge and Todd Rundgren during the making of this album is the stuff of legend. Despite the producer's sarcastic cynicism and the band's unwillingness to yield to Todd's autocratic direction, the finished product is a fantastic concept album that ... From a songwriting sense as well as performance, XTC climbed to a new level with Skylarking. The 'hit' from this album - the antagonistic 'Dear God' - wasn't originally included on the album, but was actually a B-side to the single for 'Grass'. After radio stations caught on to this biting flip-side, Geffen Records pulled the mild 'Mermaid Smiled' in favor of this newly-discovered favorite. The other songs on this album are cleverly constructed, from the quirky 'Meeting Place' to the jazz-oriented 'The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul' (masterfully done alternating between 7/8 and 4/4 time), and 'Big Day' is a brilliant ode to marriage. The tribal finale 'Sacrificial Bonfire' is another standout track, while 'Earn Enough For Us' hearkens back to 'Love On A Farmboy's Wages' from their Mummer album. They may have had to overcome many obstacles recording Skylarking, but the end result is an album that sparkles with wit, soul and a variety of gems that continue to stand the test of time. This album, to my ears, is their best effort, though many later albums contain their own gems worthy of listening. If you like Beatles-ish pop with more than a touch of wit, and lush production, Skylarking is an album that belongs in your collection.
