Yamaha RX-V757 good mdi-range Receiver
The Yamaha RX-V757 Receiver I have found that speaker placement is the key to a successful installation of the RX-V757. I my case it was my center channel speaker, which was installed about 6 feet above the floor centered between the front left and right speakers. For some reason the YPAO equalization was bright and somewhat off queue. After several attempts to get the sound to sound somewhat real, I began to check the speaker set, distance, on other parameters. What I found is that the YPAO was thinking the center channel was a phantom speaker due to it placement half-way between the front left and right speakers. I lowered the center channel speaker to approximately 3 feet or just below the plain of the bottom of my Video Monitor. After doing that I re-ran Auto-setup and the unrealistic ... The Yamaha RX-V757 Receiver I have found that speaker placement is the key to a successful installation of the RX-V757. After doing that I re-ran Auto-setup and the unrealistic sound was now more real and vibrant. The other drawn back is the sub-woofer output is always calibrated wrong, I have not figured out why. The Auto-setup always sets the level at -7 or -10, which even with the sub-woofer set at ¼ turn as specified in the RX-V757 manual. With the level set to -7 or -10 the bass does not exist, explosion are lifeless, you do not hear the intended sound of the soundtrack. Using a sound level meter and a sweep test tone from 30hz to 200hz for my installation the sub-woofer level equated to a +2.0, that brought the soundtrack alive, explosions rumbled the room as intended. My overall opinion of the RX-V757 is that it is an okay Receiver, with good power output, average sound field option, setup can be lengthy and complicated, and I say that because the YPAO is not very accurate, it is good for a base line for general listening, but beyond that you have to really get deep into the setting and tinker and adjust to get it acceptable, but without other tools like sound level meter and sweep generator the YPAO is a good start. For watching DTS or Dolby Digital soundtracks the RX-V757 does a pretty good job, good power, low distortion, it falls short when reproducing 2 channel audio, even in Pure-Direct mode. I do not fault it for this short coming as the Receiver was not designed for strictly 2 channel operation. For 2 channel I use a Kenwood M2A and the Yamaha RX-V757 as a preamp and as a preamp the Yamaha RX-V757 is awesome, it just passes the signal without alteration. As I stated before that is why I purchased the Yamaha RX-v661 and the RX-V757 as for the pre-outs, you can use external amps for all channels which for a mid-level receiver is awesome.
