Porter Rockwell: Biography
A well written and researched book about one the most interesting characters in the mid-1800s of American history. The author decided to weave Rockwell’s story into the descriptive history of the early Mormon settlements in the mid-west and through their relocating to the Great Salt Lake valley. Rockwell played several important roles during this period which is told in a detailed and fascinating manner. Porter Rockwell was a one of a kind individual who traveled to the beat of his own drum, while ever being loyal to the Mormon faith and the Church's leadership.A well written and researched book about one the most interesting characters in the mid-1800s of American history. My husband and I are LDS (Morman). We were told that Porter Rockwell was the Clint Eastwood of Mormans. We had all heard that Porter Rockwell helped the Mormans in traveling west. When the Mormans tried to settle in a town, great mobs of people would shase them away. The mobs did anything and everything to make the Mormans move on. Porter Rockwell adored Joseph Smith ( the founder of the church), he would do anything for him. Even as a child Porter would pick berries to sell. He gave the money to Joseph Smith to print the Book of Morman. In his early days (Orin) Porter Rockwell served as U.S. Deputy Marshall, Indian fighter, guerilla, and bodyguard to Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. In his earlier Missouri days he suffered months of dungeon-style imprisonment at the hands of anti-Morman ... My husband and I are LDS (Morman). He was charged with literally hundreds of killings. He also held a supernatural mystique to outlaws. He claimed Joseph Smith commanded if he would not cut his h;air, he could not die in a fight. Thus, he became known as the latter-day Samson of the West, where outlaws actually gathered about campfires and sang ballads about him. His story as a guerill fighter against 2,500 U.S. Cavalry in the Utah Was is a gripping tale, unknown even to many scholars. In this book, explosive early Morman history is unravelled with Rockwell in the forefront. Richard Lloyd Dewey quotes hundreds of original sources, journals, letters, and court records, some from sources never before tapped.It also answers questions left hanging over a hundred years. In the process he reports little known events and reveals a colorful, intensely loyal charactoer to his church, yet a portrait in dichotomy, due to human frailties. Although much of Rockwell's life is pieced together with from painstaking research, the frontiersman is still somewhat shrounded in mystery. When my father-in-law passed away, we found journels from not only his ansesters, but also my mother-in-law. They were with the Mormans that were chased away by mobs. Mormans made a lot of sacrifices in order to practice their religion. The journels mentioned how Porter Rockwell would watch over the families while the men were away. He never went inside the fence, he would do his inquries from the road. Then when the men came home, he would come in to visit. He was always a gentleman around the ladies. We wanted to know more about this Morman hero, so we bought the book. We love the book and wonder why no one ever thought to produce a movie about him. We love it, and will keep in on our bookcase forever.
