About this product

Product Information

A blistering, unsentimental portrait of the great Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, Robert Altman's VINCENT AND THEO focuses on the deeply neurotic relationship between the unstable, impoverished Vincent (Tim Roth) and his art dealer brother, Theo (Paul Rhys). Specifically, it investigates the role Theo played in providing the normality and connection to the outer world that Vincent lacked--while Vincent, in turn, acted as the living embodiment of Theo's unfulfilled artistic aspirations. In the end, Theo's inability to secure his brother's financial independence and help him achieve a sense of self-worth by selling his paintings caused him a misery almost as profound as Vincent's. Altman's theatrical version of what was originally a four-hour European miniseries is a bold return to form for the director after a stint directing film adaptations of plays. As the introverted Vincent, Roth delivers an intensely passionate performance, and Rhys is just as moving as the more reserved Theo. Altman chooses to concentrate on the artist himself, likely providing a deeper insight into the individual than scenes of him painting ever could. VINCENT AND THEO remains an unflinching and powerful interpretation of the life of one of the world's most famous artists.

  • Insight into the life of a genius

This movie serves as an invaluable insight into what it is like to be an unheralded genius. Too often, we do not praise our artists until they are gone. Van Gogh was an extremely gifted artist whom we failed to appreciate in his time. Who knows what he could have given the art world had he lived even a few years more. The movie does a great job of giving us his human side. Artistic genius is often something we think of as amorphous. Here, we are reminded that Van Gogh as a man who lived, loved, cried, laughed, became ill, and eventually died. I showed this movie to my Freshman (at Virginia Tech). Even though it is not an art class, I believe Van Gogh is one of those staples in the history of humanity with which everyone should be familiar. I wish I had the time to teach them about Mozart, ...

  • Very enlightening

I knew that VVG was a tormented soul, but this movie brought it to light as to how tormented he was. And poor, poor Theo. It was good to see the closeness of the two brothers and interesting as to the different things they had to deal with individually. I am so glad I purchased this movie and will watch it again. For some reason VVG has intrigued me since I was in junior high school, more so than any other artist and I am near retirement age now.

  • VINCENT & THEO WONDERFUL

Since thie movie was made I had only caught five minutes of it here and there and felt that I was missing a good movie. Finally, I purchased the film and discovered I was wrong. It's a great move, not just a good one. The acting by all is overwhelming and conveys the pathos in the life of a great artist. What a beautiful film overall!

  • Vincent & Theo

LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie....how true to form is it? Don't care, Tim Roth's performance simply could not have been done by anyone else. Best portrayal of Van Gogh I've seen! You do have to listen closely though, sometimes a little difficult to make out what they are saying, but still very worth watching.

  • Vincent and Theo

The story line was the most accurate of any history I have read or seen. I am very impressed by the accurate truth in the history of Vincent and Theo. Especially for the year this film was created. Bravo!
