About this product

Product Information

The Sunday Times Bestseller, and the biggest memoir of the year, from Britain's best loved food writer. 'Toast' is Nigel Slater's truly extraordinary story of a childhood remembered through food. Whether relating his mother's ritual burning of the toast, his father's dreaded Boxing Day stew or such culinary highlights of the day as Arctic Roll and Grilled Grapefruit (then considered something of a status symbol in Wolverhampton) this remarkable memoir vividly recreates daily life in sixties surburban England. His mother was a chops-and-peas sort of cook, exasperated by the highs and lows of a temperamental AGA, a finicky little son and the asthma that was to prove fatal. His father was a honey-and-crumpets man who could occasionally go off 'crack' like a gun. When Nigel's widowed father takes on a housekeeper with social aspirations and a talent in the kitchen, the following years become a heartbreaking cooking contest for his father's affections. But as he slowly loses the battle, Nigel finds a new outlet for his culinary talents, and we witness the birth of what was to become a lifelong passion for food. Nigel's likes and dislikes, aversions and sweet-toothed weaknesses form a fascinating and amusing backdrop to this incredibly moving and deliciously evocative memoir of childhood, adolescence and sexual awakening.

  • Toast: The Story of a Boy's Hunger by Nigel Slater.

I purchased this book after seeing the short drama called Toast that was on television over the Christmas period. I had heard from several people that the TV drama did not really reflect all that happened in the book. After I'd received it I started reading and initially I found the short chapters strange. I however soon got into the style it is written in and memeories came flooding back around the food that we had back in the 60s. I think this book would relate to younger people as weel and my son is currently reading it on my recommendation. The book is both very funny and very sad, his teenage years are so well portrayed all the feelings that we all went through with emotions and friends. This would be an ideal book to take away on holiday as I think most people would read it in a ...

  • Enjoyable and nostalgic read.

This was a book group read for me. it was an easy to read book with small chapters so I could read a section before nodding off at night! His reminiscences relating to food made me check his age and found he was only 2 years younger than me which was why the food dished up at home made me so nostaglgic! From his point of view his childhood was a sad one. I would like to know what his family thought as it sounded much like a "kevin the Teenager" rant at times. Thoroughly recommmend it as a read and shall now try his recipes!
