    Hardware-Based FaxModem. Works well with faxes containing extensive graphics.

    This is a hardware-based faxmodem, meaning all of the fax and modem functions are performed by the hardware on the PCI card, as opposed to a softmodem or Winmodem, which relies on a PC's hardware and software to perform some or most of the faxmodem communication functions. This can often improve faxing because the PCI card is solely dedicated to sending the fax, and not dependent on PC processing power and system memory being dedicated to the task. This is usually not a problem with late-model PC systems, but I've noticed that this faxmodem seems to handle faxes containing extensive graphics better than soft/winmodems, which can often disconnect the fax call when trying to send pages with complex graphics. This is the latest model PCI Fax Modem offered by USR. It's 2004 technology, but ...

    Not so good.

    I bought one of these modems on eBay and it turned out to be a 5610a which doesn't have many drivers available. However it worked better than my old 5610a so I didn't complain too loudly. None of the PCI bus Sportster modems are very good. I once had a new one (either a 5610b or a 5610c) and it only lasted a couple of years. The one advantage they have is that they are a full hardware modem and they will work in Linux. In fact newer Linux versions will detect them automatically. IMHO the best modem USR ever made was the Courier V. Everything. Unfortunately USR never made a PCI version. If you have an old computer with an ISA slot it is worth buying a used Courier and trying it. If you have an extra serial port you can also get an external one, although they are a little pricier.

    Works with Window$ 8.1

    Worked in a Windows 8.1 machine when other modems do not. Windows picked it right up and loaded the drivers automatically. It's hard to still find PCI slot modems these days.

    U.S. Robotics USR5610B Analog Modem

    I bought this analog modem because I needed to go wireless. We had to move my wireless router to a different room and my desktop PC could no longer be hard wired. The performance of the modem was very poor, however. After a few weeks of frusrtation I upgraded to a USB modem that actually works.

    Good eBayer

    I needed a TAPI compliant modem for testing and decided to go with this one on eBay because is was the lowest price.
